It is a MORAL obligation. *Of course* a regime that has overthrown the rule of law will redefine what is and isn't legal. What Germany did to the Jews and other unwanted people was legal according to the Nazis' interpretation of the law.
90% of modern "journalists" have no convictions whatsoever, nor do they have any interest in engaging in proper investigative journalism (because that requires a lot of effort and also a good amount of technical expertise). All they care about is landing a big story and not damaging their careers.
The pardons issued by this illegal, illegitimate regime of insurrectionists should all be regarded as null and void anyway, as soon as a sane government has been reestablished.
I don't know the details of this particular case, but the totenkopf was used by Prussian hussar regiments as far back as the 18th century, long before anybody knew what a Nazi is.
But good thing we peacefully transferred power to these insurrectionist traitors, even though we fucking knew exactly where this all is going, right? π€¬
