Spent some time trying to do conservative culling of geometry for distance function evaluation. Turns out I ended up reinventing something like GJK (which I really have no clue about or experience with) with exact bounds.

I've got a new blog post for all of you fine folks! It runs through the additions to D3D12 since it was released, and finishes up with some of the things that have changed for me personally in my code.

(And yes it's really been 10 years 👴).

Ten Years of D3D12
For those of us that have been using it from the start, it can be hard to believe that Direct3D 12 has been around for nearly ten years now. Windows 10 was released on July 29th 2015, and D3D12 has be...

Ok so when Microsoft was making the first Xbox I was doing Flash ads for them and they had an 800 page brand standards binder and when I used a green that was, and I quote, 6% off, I got my ass chewed out. Fucking losers now. Have some goddamn self respect.
The fucking head of fucking XBox Graphics used a fucking "AI" slop image to hire new engineers but couldn't tell that the fucking screen on the fucking monitor is facing backwards.

Async compute all the things
GPUs make work parallelism very easy by design: each drawcall/dispatch shader instruction operates on batches of vertices, pixels, threads in general at the same time automatically. On the other ha…

Tried setting up some hardcore viscosity test cases earlier. Non-dimensionalized viscosity is roughly 20,000, for those who know what that implies, using 3 substeps (so roughly 6500 per substep)

Convergence for the implicit solver isn't perfect. I need more time to tune it.

I posted a few days ago the shader ISA code for the atan2() instruction, the size of which appeared to catch people by surprise. This inspired me to write a blog post to discuss the “hidden” cost of shader instructions a bit more. interplayoflight.wordpress.com/2025/01/19/t...
The hidden cost of shader instructions

Fairly happy with this week's progress in simplifying and streamlining the way I do my shared memory caching.

Previously I had maybe 3-4 different hacky poorly generalizeable and unwieldy approaches that I never consistently decided on in sparse EmberGen, but now it's neat and easily generalizeable
