Once again urging archaeologists to critically assess the AI push into archaeology. There is a huge swath of problematic ethical issues that come with the AI tech & tech lords & we don't have to make it easier for them to insert themselves in archaeology by welcoming them in. Don't be complicit.

Much like colonizing museums claim about African artifacts held in European and American collections, if the Louvre cannot properly take care of its possessions, perhaps another nation can. I heard the Benin Royal Museum in Nigeria may have a space.

I have withdrawn my in-person participation from the @asor-research.bsky.social conference
Despite the undeniable genocide, scholasticide, and cultural heritage destruction happening in Palestine, and despite the clear complicity of universities and archaeology in the ongoing atrocities and longer-term oppression of Palestinian people (most recently noted in Francesca Albanese's recent UN report, "From Economy of Occupation to Economy of Genocide", July 2025), the ASOR program includes not only 17 papers authored / co-authored by members of the Israel Antiquities Authority, but also numerous others authored by those working at institutions with demonstrated ties to Palestinian oppression or located in occupied territories. It is particularly deceitful to have accepting scholars working at universities in occupied territories (e.g., Ariel University in the occupied West Bank) while listing them as "Independent Researchers" (screenshots in comments below from the ASOR program and the Ariel University's Department of Land of Israel Studies and Archaeology profiles page). In light of this, I have withdrawn my in-person participation from the conference.
