Same thing that makes bike lanes and transit controversial many places

That bikes are allowed on roads is a default / leftover of bikes having been around decades before motor vehicles … if asked to decide, how many legislatures would explicitly permit them today? I’m not optimistic. And any state / province can ban easily with stroke of legislative pen

Locker at Crowfoot was my go to for a year when I was articling and living w/ family in Rocky Ridge. 80 m 5 km climb to the house but mornings were fun, easily beat the feeder bus time (direct route via cat walks and Stoney overpass). At one point the Stoney overpass was planned to be for buses too

For it but without more infra and better SNIC I’d only rely on it seasonally.

We’re riding the coattails of the 1980s though

This is why we need a provincial police force
February 9, 2026 at 7:35 PM
No, and I agree that’s needed - good rules / definitions are just the start.

Ontario already disallows under 18s as passengers on bikes. BC’s current rules are decent: www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/...
E-bike requirements
E-bikes, or motor-assisted cycles, must meet certain requirements to be legal and allowed for use on public roads in B.C.

It’s tough when you don’t have a government that will engage in good faith on bike infra. If you did - advocacy for limits on e-motos and education about pedelecs vs e-motos would be a good idea

This is a very real danger. Nothing would stop Canadian provincial governments from banning anything electric + bike entirely from all public infrastructure.

He is right….we need more people speaking out like this.

Mind you in the last decade we redid the Bow-Crowchild spaghetti multiple times including to build Blue Line through there and did… nothing to allow a gentle grade for active modes from Sunalta / Scarboro up to Shaganappi Park / Killarney

I've never understood how, between 10th St NW ROW and that entire hillside, there is *nothing* there for people walking or wheeling. If only we had built our LRT more recently than the 80s and had a path going up that hill alongside the tracks - but still, tons of room now and lots of solutions

Why? Is that temporary?
February 8, 2026 at 6:07 PM
Yeah, strange but true. French moved away from the connoisseur spelling at some point which is now used only in English: www.noslangues-ourlanguages.gc.ca/writing-tips...

Strangely, though connoisseur is obviously a French loan word, the modern French spelling is… connaisseur
