This is Not-Ship: a newsletter using data and visuals to navigate our turbulent world.

Everything is A LOT lately. It's all so uncertain. And the way I try to make sense of things is with data. So, that's what Not-Ship is all about. Come chart the chaos with me.

Discovered some great data. You know that law of the sea: Women and children first? Yeah ... nope. The numbers show it's "every man for himself."

New year, new uncertainties.

Me? I combat the overwhelming feelings with data. That's why I launched Not-Ship: a newsletter where we navigate ~It All~ together. Come chart the chaos with me.

Yeah. I imagine it's an almost impossible thing to compare. Could perhaps compare like-cites. So, similar age cities in the US or something. πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

I wonder if there is data somewhere that would allow for a comparison of the length of public construction work in different cities... πŸ€” I've lived in about 8 different cities and every single one thinks it's the worst. lol.

It's true, there are definitely some politics searches! But the vast majority are not. I count ~39 days when the top article is politics related.

What feeds our curiosity? Entertainment and recent deaths. Last year, more than 50% of days had a most-read Wikipedia page in one of those two categories.

Here's the ENTIRE list of most-read English language Wikipedia pages for 2025.

"While the world churns through crisis after crisis, our curiosities remain remarkably stable: People watch the same things, and talk about the same sports. People die, and we want to know their stories."

Not too much feedback! I always love hearing how I can improve. And you’ve made good points. Thank you!

Good suggestion. If you go to the piece itself you will see that the chart title mentions this is just 2019. But I could do a better job of explaining that these dates move around.

Folks, here's a link to my newsletter where I express my exasperation with LinkedIn.

Maybe we can get a critical mass of data viz people to agree to put in real effort to make BlueSky social work.

There's one day a year when nearly 6 billion people β€” almost three quarters of the global population β€” have a public holiday.

It's crazy that the US has the nearly the same rate of road traffic deaths per 100,000 people as India, Brazil and China. It does worse than Indonesia and Mexico. Wow!

When was the last time you lingered? You know, just hanging about. No purpose. No urgency. No real desire to leave.

People don't linger like they used to. It's a problem.
