I have been saying this for a while now. There are stark parallels to Nazi Germany. It takes decades to build a legacy like the 🧪 NIH. It takes little effort to destroy it. Political oppression resulted in Germany’s brain drain to us. We are about to feel the same.

People often forget that 100 years ago, Germany, not the USA, had the best research universities in the World.
Political interference by the Nazis, chased many of the best and brightest scientists away from Germany (e.g. Albert Einstein), US has dominated ever since. (Some of you will glibly say, "but America has more money to spend than anyone else" - remember it wasn't money that chased prominent German scientists away, it was a lack of academic freedom).
Contemporary American Conservatives/ Republicans believe they should emulate Hungary's Viktor Orban, but Hungary does not matter.
Whatever Orban does to Hungarian universities does not matter - but Harvard matters, a lot, to America's global reputation and the reputation of the US university system.
Anyway, it a lot easier to destroy a thing than to build a thing.
