Hunting low mass exoplanets.

To continue shouting at the clouds, here's the evolution of the time allocated in ESPRESSO per type of proposals, and the evolution of the number of proposals scheduled. 2026, the first single-period year, will the the year with the lowest variety of science types and of independent PIs🔭#exoplanets
The Death Star was destroyed in 1977 — the same year the Wow! Signal appeared. Coincidence? 🤔✨ #StarWars #WowSignal

Now we have to waste time fighting them to be allowed to do what they aproved on the first place. If we fail, we will be delayed at least a year (over the year and a half already caused by their delay) and might miss out window of opportunity (2.5 years in science is not negligible).

Now the first 1/3 of the money arrived, and the same day the funding body informs us that It can only be used for equipment. Not for wages. We would discuss about that for next year. Not the first time I see something like that, but a big load of crap. Without people we are paralized.

So we were won a big sum, spread over 3 years, for several projects. The money was meant to hire people (top priority), buy equipment (second priority), and travels (third priority). First It was delayed one year and a half due to "administrative difficulties" (created by the funding body).

Funding bodies are really the worst. Kings of overpromising and underdelivering.

Rich people forming a cult, killing for fun, and having weird power games is surprisingly more realistic that this was ever aiming to be. Can't wait, the first one was quite good!

It is, that's my sad plan for later. I know that for atmospheres, it was typically > 20% per semester

A better version of the plot with the biggest missing pieces. I truly cannot wrap my head around all this 🔭#exoplanets

I won't comment on any specific proposal (I don't have access to read them), but I had never seen such a narrow-minded selection by a time allocation committee. Having not a single proposal approved, on ESPRESSO, for atmospheres, or Earth-like planets, is ridiculous 🔭#exoplanets

Been checking the science topics of the proposals approved by the ESO OPC for ESPRESSO. 75% of the time went to one type of proposal. Statistics-focused follow up of transiting systems. There isn't a single proposal focused on discoveries, atmospheres, or anything low-mass planets 🔭#exoplanets
Francia está defendiendo a España:
In @nytopinion.nytimes.com

“MAGA-style leaders may say that our country can’t handle taking in so many migrants, that this is a suicidal move — the desperate act of a collapsing country,” writes Pedro Sánchez, the prime minister of Spain. “But don’t let them fool you. Spain is booming.”
Opinion | I’m the Prime Minister of Spain. This Is Why the West Needs Migrants.
In Spain, it is our duty to become the welcoming and tolerant society our ancestors would have hoped to find on the other side of our borders.

We are closer than we think from having LLM written articles to be then summarized and interpreted by LLMs for people to just take a list of generates bullet points at face value

I just read it... the absurdity of it... a violation of the anonymity rule to show that the team behind the GTO proposal (flagged and titled as GTO proposal) are indeed the GTO team.

They clearly don't have a single expert in spectroscopy of exoplanets in the panel that handles exoplanets for their flagship spectrograph. I have no other way to explain the feedbacks.

I honestly have a hard time believing how useless the ESO feedbacks are, and how often they miss the mark and get basic concepts wrong... Both for approved and rejected proposals.

ESO TAC results out today and the website is so saturated there's no way to check them lol🔭

Plenty of people getting mad because the current economic situation has plenty of issues, but as someone whose circle entered the job market between 2008-2012, I celebrate this with no asterisks. That time was BLEAK. I think a lot of people have forgotten where we come from.

It's happening!!! Pandora is going to space in just over 16 hours (if all goes well). Pandora is going to help us study exoplanet atmospheres, even when their host stars are misbehaving. I am headed up to Vandenberg to watch the launch shortly, and will make a thread about the mission/launch here!

So today I created the mock data I needed for the proof of concept. It looks beautiful (obviously) and realistic (this wasn't so obvious).

Had a project/paper idea while in the shower. Hadn't have one of those for a while... and now I really want to start with it. I think it can be done in a couple days, *IF* it works.

So we are starting 2026 with a US military attack on Venezuela, the kidnapping of the head of state, and the likely backing of a US-friendly new leader (protected by US military) who will gladly sell all natural resource reserves to US companies. Henry Kissinger would be proud.
I feel like the history of western imperialism is often like this, where there's an almost-plausible case for resource-grabbing, an almost plausible geopolitical explanation (first Caracas, then Havana), and a sort of liberal imperialist fig leaf to keep democrats from being too mad (the Nobel shit)

Da. Igual.
