Librarian. Frequently on the move in Toronto with Wyatt the delightful Springer.
The chief scandal of some big academic publisher profit margins is we end up forced to nickle-and-dime good quality independent publishing. Dysfunctional in several respects. Hats off to Australian/New Zealand librarians for helping hold the line. researchwhisperer.org/2025/11/25/l...

Heard about 2 hours ago while walking to lunch on campus, in a kind of blasé voice: "yeah, I think communism is okay, but I like capitalism better." It's got me asking myself some questions.

I love olives but this vile trend made me switch to Gibsons.
In matters of dirty martinis, there’s seemingly no limit to how filthy consumers will take them. “There’s not a lot of other drinks like it that are so salty, so savory. It’s like eating a pretzel.” nyti.ms/3Wp4LpB

I’ve been corrected. It’s a state memorial service. Her funeral was in the UK.
Saw Olivia Chow and John Tory en route to Hilary Weston’s funeral at St Paul’s on Bloor. Hope there’s no fisticuffs. Big procession with mounted unit and marching band along Bloor. I went to Loblaws and bought a lime and a tomato, which is how I choose to mourn.

I really need to learn LaTeX. Or some other text markup approach for pdfs. Adobe Acrobat is killing me with formatting headers/footers.

If you're in Toronto and enjoy watching self-entitled middle-aged white men meltdown at a minor inconvenience, I suggest a visit to the Manulife Loblaws. Some of the credit machines down and the 10-minute delay to pay is seemingly too much to bear. I pity the staff and shudder for civilization.

I run a VPN on my wifi router and it works like a charm with one exception: I can't access WorldCat unless I disable WireGuard. Feels like my librarian status is somewhat compromised.

I do wonder if this might be best approach. Every country leader tell the orange moron to go jump in the lake (or a less polite version). I suspect we would get through whatever is happening right now more quickly.

Wyatt stops for the camera. All the Great Lakes swimming has boosted his shag factor. It’s a lovely morning here in deep SW Ontario.

I took a few weeks of vacation in August where I forced myself to check out from work. The difference in my focus and ability to get stuff done is remarkable. And I'm less cranky. Canada could do better on this front. Eyeing France, Germany, and Sweden. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...

Like all common public goods, the post-secondary sector in Ontario is a mess. And this article makes clear what a financial bonanza the university crisis is for consultants. For health, it's nursing temp agencies. For housing, developers. And on and on. ottawacitizen.com/feature/how-...

A regular summer outing when in city on weekends is early morning trips to Toronto Islands. Beaches empty and we go swimming and have great little adventures before the crowds arrive. And park staff look other way re dogs on beach/off-leash rules at that hour.

I had a Golf for a few pandemic years and it was terrific. Nimble in city, powerful and quiet on highway, and cavernous for moving stuff. And bring back stick shifts (although next car will likely be EV).

Another lesson today on not challenging entitlement. On upside, nasty well-to-do person shifted yelling to me, thus sparing homeless person minding their own business more diatribe. Trying to call out that sort of behaviour more often and encourage others to do likewise if they feel safe doing so.

Perhaps a minor detail in the grand scheme of things, but I wonder if the plan is for the US to default on debt payments. Until then, the skies the limit on transferring more wealth to the already wealthy.
