“Freedom of speech” is not synonymous with, and not limited to, the First Amendment. Freedom of speech is a value we can all choose to uphold in our workplaces, schools and social circles. It is in tension with other values, such as safety and decency. The government has no choice. We do.
Also, the people pushing this claim have a documented history of lying about other things. It’s worth pointing that out. Serial liars should be identified as such.

In my experience, the anti-vegans are more strident and obnoxious than the vegans. I don’t recall seeing anyone wearing a pro-veganism t-shirt, but I sure remember some making fun of vegans.
