Last day of #RightsCon! Excited about future conversations and collaboration. Come to our booth and make sure we get your input about which #DigitalPrinciples matter most to your region and work, and find out more about how you can collaborate on our #DigitalRightsScorecard and more!

If the creation and dissemination of #IBSA is criminalised then platforms have to put safeguards in place and ensure all their content is created consensually. - Hate Aid #TFGBV #deepfakes #Rightscon2025
“What we need is criminalisation of the dissemination and creation of internet-based abuse. Then illegal content will have to be removed immediately and if it isn’t you can go to court. Which gives more options and rights to survivors. - Hate Aid #TFGBV #Rightscon2025
“We need to expand our view to not just supporting survivors but to look at prevention as well” - SVPA #TFGBV #deepfakes #Rightscon2025
We need to move towards looking at three levels of prevention - individual (values and community), institutional (internal policy and consequences) and systemic (tech accountability). We also need research to document the magnitude of the problem. #deepfakes #TFGBV #Rightscon2025
“At the global level we don’t have good examples from the global north. In #Pakistan last year there was an influx of #deepfakes targeting woman political leaders.” There is also a continuum of online to offline abuse. #TFGBV #Rightscon2025
“In #SouthAsia the governments has criminalised #TFGBV but they don’t understand how to address it. They don’t understand the virality and how fast it speeds. They on existing laws that are poorly drafted.” @digitalrightspk.bsky.social
Our @rightscon.org session “Survivor-Centred Solutions to AI-Facilitated GBV: A Global Roundtable Of Practitioners” has kicked off in Taipei! We’re exploring the gaps that exist in addressing #deepfakes and #GBV with a focus on survivor stories and perspectives. #Rightscon2025
All #DigitalRights are essential, but which #DigitalPrinciples resonate most with your work and your region? Come find us at @rightscon.org ’s Community Village and let us know! Find out more about our digital principles here: lnkd.in/d5fZ9mvy

Shout out to Lina Khan's FTC and the amazing work they have been doing, summarized in this post. This what a functioning regulatory body looks like & what we should continue to hold as expectations even in the face of pressure to normalize anything less.

AI and the Risk of Consumer Harm
People often talk about “safety” when discussing the risks of AI causing harm. AI safety means different things to different people, and those looking for a definition here will be disappointed.

UK Govt to make creating & sharing sexually explicit #deepfake images a criminal offense, explaining "the proliferation of these hyper-realistic images has grown at an alarming rate, causing devastating harm to victims, particularly women and girls who are often the target”

The UK is going to make creating sexually explicit deepfakes a crime, the government has announced.

A new offence will make "it clear there is no excuse for creating a sexually explicit deepfake of someone without their consent"

(Annoucement at link below)
Government crackdown on explicit deepfakes
Predators who create sexually explicit ‘deepfakes’ could face prosecution as the Government bears down on vile online abuse.

I've spent the past year interviewing Hannah Byrne, a former Counterterrorism policy manager at Meta who quit the company after coming to believe she helping build a racial profiling censorship machine. She shares her story today for the first time.

We can’t talk about the future of tech and digital space without talking about the impact on other issues and rights. Decision makers must take a holistic approach to development to ensure advancement does not come at the cost of human rights, and the climate.
#ICYMI: AI’s hunger for electric power is threatening U.S. #climate goals

🌎🌍🌏Our recent reports into #Deepfakes and #Doxxing, both forms of online abuse which disproportionately target women and girls, found that neither is explicitly referenced or addresses in any laws in any of the jurisdictions we surveyed in our research. #16Days
💻Tech-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence (#TFGBV) and other forms of online abuse cannot be overlooked or sidelined during #16DaysofActivism.
"I'm encouraged by the energy of the #WomensRights movement, and the digital space is no different. If we're going to achieve what we can achieve with the #GDC, if we're going to make the progress we can make, we need to do it together." - Aurra Kawanzaruwa, AfriDigital Zimbabwe
#AfIGF
"The same urgency people have when they are demanding their rights to water or food is the urgency we need to see when it comes to people demanding their #DigitalRights". Hallima Nyota. Linda Data Kenya
#AfIGF #GDC
"Gender is not properly mainstreamed in the #GDC. We see the word, there is reference to #TFGBV, there is reference to #GenderEquality, and the #DigitalDivide, but its is not embedded throughout the document. And there is a lack of mechanisms to counter #GBV." - Amanda Manyame, Equality Now. #AfIGF
"We can't ignore the issue of #DigitalAccess. How will people understand the digital space, how will they recognise #TFGBV or #misinformation, if they don't have experiece in the space?" - Aurra Kawanzaruwa, AfriDigital Zimbabwe #AfIGF
