What I’m Reading: Annelies Judson
Children’s writer and poet Annelies Judson has a ‘terrible habit’ of taking out more library books than she can read before they’re due back.

A new article up on The Sapling :)
'… the sensibilities of a British illustrator from the 1970s aren’t inherently the best choice for a book being published in Aotearoa in 2025'
@babybookdel.bsky.social looks at the Margaret Mahy Illustration Prize, which asks unpublished illustrators to reimagine Mahy classics

We, like readers across Aotearoa, are deeply saddened to hear of the death of Maurice Gee.
We will be compiling tributes to him and his work over the coming days – please reach out to us or email [email protected] if you would like to contribute.

Here’s the website you didn’t know you needed today.
Omg, 😍.

My husband is a graphic designer who loves Scandinavian minimalism, so I suspect this advice came from him.

Please don’t tell him that I set this in Calibri.

Excited to have an Honourable Mention in PBParty. It’s the reassurance I needed that it works for an overseas audience (and that it works in general 🤣). I have all fingers crossed that this story will be picked up one day. Thanks to the judges for all the effort and time they put into this!
2025 #PBParty honorable mentions are up. Congrats everyone! 🎉

I'm happy dancing for those on the list & sending hugs & cyber chocolate to those who didn't make it in this year. 🍫 Keep working and putting yourself out there & I know your YES will come.

The news: A tropical cyclone is coming

My children: Can we get into our togs and play with the sprinkler by the trampoline?

Me, waxing lyrical about the loveliness of the Kidlit community of Aotearoa, and also with a wero for all of us within that community to open up our arms even wider.

That’s my name! On a book cover!!

The team Scholastic NZ have sent it to the printer, so soon it will be a Real Actual Book. With illustrations by award-winning Nikki Slade Robinson, who did an amazing job of bring the turkeys to life 🦃 🦃 🦃

So exciting! Watch this space for a release date 👀

I would like to call this experience “an interview” but it would perhaps be best described as “a lovely coffee and a grand old chit-chat with some pre-prepared questions which largely got overlooked”.

Still, it looks like an interview now that I’ve written it all down 🤣

Hey #PBParty people. I’m sure I saw a post about starting critique groups with others who entered. Can someone tag me in the post or point me in the right direction?

In the last 24 hours, youngest child moved from a cot to a bed, and next youngest child learnt to ride a pedal bike. Feeling a bit emosh about all this growing up 🥹

I’m all for a good whakatauki, but I think this advice has universal value.

I got to interview Elena de Roo for @thesaplingnz and she was so wonderful and easy to talk to that I accidentally didn’t pay for my iced mocha at the end and now every time I read the interview that’s all I can think about 🤦‍♀️😅
