ENI - like other polluting industries - know that public opinion is turning on them.

That's why they aim to associate themselves with the world's most-loved sporting events.

It's time to change that. Join the movement against sportswashing. 👇

But the chickens are coming home to roost for ENI.

In a groundbreaking legal case last year, Italy's highest court ruled that fossil fuel companies can be sued for climate damages. 👏

And what's worse, ENI knew about the risks of burning fossil fuels 50 years ago.

In the 1970s, the company ignored its own research centre - Isvet - which warned of the 'catastrophic' consequences of continuing fossil fuelled business as usual.

ENI now refers to itself as an 'integrated energy company' with a 'decarbonization plan'. 🤨

Yet, in the latest assessment of the company's climate plan, it was revealed that renewables made up just 1.1% of its energy mix in 2024. 🤥

This year, the Winter Olympics is sponsored by Italian oil and gas giant ENI.

Its deal with the Games is estimated to result in emissions of around 700,000 tonnes of CO2e.

That's roughly the annual emissions of 150,000 fossil fuelled cars. 🚗💨

History proves that sports can move away from harmful sponsorship, no matter how much money they have.

The 1988 Winter Games led the way by banning tobacco sponsorship, the leading sponsorship industry at the time.

Polluting industries are the next test.

Thankfully, athletes are speaking out.

Greenlandic biathlete Ukaleq Slettemark speaking on Eni's sponsorship of the Games:

“It’s a complete contradiction when fossil fuels make winters disappear - threatening the very existence of winter sports.”

These sponsorship emissions will result in:

❄️ 3.2 km² of snow loss

🧊 20+ million tonnes of glacier ice melted

And Eni - Italy's largest fossil fuel company and the second largest in Europe - accounts for more than half of this. 🛢️💨

But there is a hidden footprint of promoting high-carbon companies and boosting their business in the process.

The likely increased business of just three sponsors - Eni, Stellantis, ITA Airways - could induce 1.3 million tonnes of CO₂e, 40% more than the Games itself.

Based solely on this data, this pollution will cause:

❄️ 2.3 km² of snow cover lost

🧊 14 million tonnes of glacier ice melted

The Winter Games is facing an existential threat, but as a mega event polluter - it is part of the problem.

Based on official data, the research estimates that the Games alone will result in 930,000 tonnes of CO₂e.

The largest single source? Spectator travel - responsible for nearly half the total emissions.

The Winter Games reach ~2 billion viewers worldwide, making it the most important event in snow sports.

But staging this mega-event has a huge impact on the environment, even as warming winters threaten the mountains it relies on. ⛰️
