Hilary Cass: Gender-affirming care is scarce, and young people are suffering because of that

Hilary Cass' Recommendation: Tighten those screws - make life harder for young Trans+ people - restrict puberty pausing, oestrogen, and testosterone therapies

Sketchy 'evidence' + gender-critical ideology

The Cass review into children's gender services in the UK continues to be terrible.

A new report from Australia led by the fantastic Dr. Julia Moore - and featuring me - looks into the issues in detail.

My new piece.

A new paper from an Australian team shines a light on the problems with the review

I’ve spoken to TfL workers who are terrified.

One worker told me he can’t sleep, he doesn’t know what to say to his family. Another, pregnant with her first child, fears she’ll be deported before giving birth.

You can watch my exchange with the Mayor here ⬇️

I raised the devastating impact of sudden visa rule changes with the Mayor – over 200 TfL workers are at risk of deportation.

These are people who trusted the system, built lives here and are now left in limbo.

I'm glad the Mayor has committed to lobby the Government and support these workers.

Not got a clue what “transgender issues” are.

Trans rights are human rights and that should be that.

Sadly you are very right. I didn’t want to repeat some of the worse stuff.

Appalling transphobia and hateful gender critical ideology on open display at Conservative Party conference.

Glad to see it challenged by the lone voice of my London Assembly colleague @andrewboff.bsky.social who is a reliable trans ally, in the audience in a trans rights are human rights T shirt.
News headline from independent. Black background with white text “gender critical activists accused of ‘hateful’ remarks after suggesting trans rights supporters have ‘broken brains’

Labour MP said was appalled but not surprised.

Possible to have a mix of benches in some places. And totally hear you about arms being helpful.

Our local NIMBY objected to some apple trees planted on a green space in case the dreaded teens did naughty things with them.

She was also hugely anti-LTN and, strangely enough, quite relaxed about the vandalism that occurred to the planters during our LTN trial.

That’s very interesting and makes sense in relation to experience of walking with my aging mum.

The maximum walking distance is *way* lower than I think people understand. From DfT Inclusive Mobility:
A table

Recommended distance limit without a rest:

Wheelchair users 150 metres

Vision impaired people 150 metres

Walking stick and cane users 50 metres

Mobility impaired people without a
walking stick 100 metres

Just wow! 🤦‍♀️ 🤷‍♀️

Up there with ‘we can’t plant apple trees on the verge, teenagers might throw apples at passing cars’ which I heard round the council-table😔

If you want places to be accessible to older and disabled people installing benches is one very helpful thing to do.

Seems a few people are worried that young people will sit on a bench and be a bit annoying, so the bench won’t be installed after all.

"The single most important behaviour, design or regulation for creating streets conducive to walking and cycling, was physical separation between the modes"

We've got a new study out, learning from a broad mixture of street users, planners and designers

www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
Highlights
For marginalised street users mode separation is the key to human-scale movement.
Streets conducive to walking and cycling have functional, safe and accessible design.
Professionals must approach street design, regulation and user behaviour holistically.
Combinations of influencing factors persuade people to either use or avoid a street.
There are no easy fixes to the public realm that will work for all non-drivers.

I joined the Greens in June. Conference last weekend felt like a kind of homecoming. I’ve been adrift these last few years, mourning Alice, despairing at a ruling class that seems intents on heaping misery on all minorities. In the depths of grief hope wasn’t enough, but now it breaths life into me.

I said that @greenparty.org.uk membership is rising by 1000 new people a day.

I was wrong.

Yesterday we welcomed 2000 new people.

Or is it that I'm saying things the Telegraph doesn't want to hear?

I suggest they might want to avoid our Party Broadcast this evening!
Courageous political leadership means telling an audience what they don't want to hear. Zack Polanski will never do that.

Renationalise the railways.
Cheaper tickets and a more reliable service.
Railways run for the passengers not the shareholders.

If you catch trains this thread about trying to buy a super off-peak single is very relatable.

Love @carlafrancome.bsky.social’s determination to get a flexible affordable ticket, but it shouldn’t be this hard.

train.

“I’d like a super off-peak single please!” I announced brightly. The lady told me the price and started typing. I checked once again I was getting this ticket. And I kid you not the lady behind the counter actually said “I decided to give you the cheapest ticket”.

Buying train tickets shouldn’t be this hard. Price them exactly the same each day all day/ route and people will magically organise themselves to travel when they need to + around rush hour if they can.

It is really not that hard unless it is a scheme to make money.
