Oregon State is taking the bye week seriously - no press availability and all the coaches are out recruiting - but I worked out a new episode of my podcast last night.

My main topic was the Beavs 1st win, the changes that led to it, and whether they can get a win streak
State of the Beavs: What Does The Lafayette Win Change For Oregon State Football?
This past weekend, the Oregon State Beavers finally picked up their first victory of the season with a 45-13 win over the Lafayette Leopards. With a 1-7 record

there's only one coach on your beat who solves rubiks cubes, and it's not Neville
Jorge Pola wrote about Gabarri Johnson - potentially Oregon State's next starting quarterback on November 1st vs Wazzu - and what Johnson provided the Beavers' offense in their first win of the season.

How Gabarri Johnson’s Second-Half Spark Pushed Oregon State to First Win of 2025
In Oregon State's first win of 2025, the quarterback situation looked quite different from previous weeks.

no, there's still no footballing culture in America, this is just Cascadia
For me, I go back to what Jesus said verbatim about materialism and greed. It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than it is for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.

The real Jesus - not the bleach white delusion of popular western imagination - was a radical.
I can't speak for anybody else, but for ME, it is my Christianity that informs what makes the Trump era so profoundly odious to me. Matthew 5 shapes my politics and ethics more than any theory book I've read. And i know there are hundreds of thousands of people who feel the same way in the US.
Here's a key exchange. Rep Chip Roy smeared protesters for not believing we have "no king but Jesus," but @anamariecox.bsky.social reports seeing many protesters in his district on No Kings' side with signs bearing more pious religious messages than his.

Feels like the biggest postseason curse choke since the Bartman game
Give a wellness check to the Mariners fans in your life
I'm sorry, Dan. Feels like the Bartman game.
9 more outs. History might happen tonight.
Oregon State has announced a committee that will help them hire their next head coach:

- #ProBeavs NFL WR Brandin Cooks
- Former OSU head coach Mike Riley
- OSU alumni John Stirek (OSU Foundation), John Ricci (Dutch Bros/Burgerville), Marty Reser (Reser's), and Nikki Neuburger (Nike/Lululemon)
It's been such an up/down year for the Thorns. I don't regret season tickets but I probably should have had a heart checkup after some of these matches.

If they somehow earn a home playoff game after all the injuries they've suffered - and the self inflicted Hina trade - I will be overjoyed.
One round of play left in the #NWSL regular season. Louisville + NC play will fight for the final playoff berth.

Quarterfinal matchups as they stand are pretty juicy:

KC v LOU
Spirit v Gotham 👀
Pride v Thorns
Reign v Wave

We could still see KC-Gotham and/or Cascadia Derby
Something to watch for any NWSL fans in my footprint: KC has been the best team in the league this year, by a country mile. The obvious favorite to win the title. Last night their best forward got hurt, and now all of that is in doubt.
Me: “KC Current are number 1, won the Shield in September, have won the most ever points in an NWSL season, surely we will see more rotation as they wrap up the season.”

Vlatko with tonight’s starting XI vs. Houston:

Stay safe, Oregon, and be yourselves. The Feds want to tell everyone that we're violent terrorists. You know thats a lie. Prove it today!
Went out for dinner with my gal - she loved Oregon during the Chip years, but isn't much of a sports fan these days - and I tried to explain the greatness of Ohtani, because every couple of minutes I kept looking away in awe at the screen. He is the greatest baseball player ever.
I can’t believe Shohei Ohtani did all that in one night against other professional athletes
This *is* the reason government accounts are finally pivoting here. Twitter is dead. They want to spread their hateful message and persuade you to accept fascism before the 2028 election.
The reason they're coming after this place is because they can't control the people on it and it drives them nuts.
Oregon State uniform reveal: Retro Benny goes back in storage this week.
I'm reminded of the discourse after Marten first started dating Dora, and then the discourse erupting once again when Marten and Dora broke up. Ignore the chuds. They've been wrong about your work so, so many times.
** FIVE GAMES TO WATCH **

The Wazzu Cougs' faithful have my sympathy. A month after an ugly rout at North Texas, and a week after a razor-thin upset bid fell short at top-five Ole Miss, Washington State's mystery bag of a football team heads to #18 Virginia.

Officially official. The WNBA expansion Portland Fire, as expected, have hired their first head coach: Alex Sarama.

In an official press release, Sarama's excitement drips: "At the Fire, we won't just create a team - we will redefine how the game is taught and played".
