I write Extra Points, a newsletter about off-the-field stories in college sports. I also (badly) make computer games, woodworking projects, and jokes.
Chicago.
Sure. Gimme a second to uh, gently encourage my kids to turn off animal crossing and start the going to bed process, and I'll share a few tweets about why I decided to do that.

(and yeah most of the exmos i know, including my lovely wife, are out on church ENTIRELY. Which i completely understand)
Do you mind sharing how you made that decision? Like many ex-Mormons I left organized religion altogether but I definitely spent time thinking about a different path.

lol you know what? While I have come to appriciate (in responsible moderation) most of the vices that were forbidden to me as an active mormon, I gotta admit...I still don't drink coffee. I have water during coffee hour.

Now, if we had White Monster in the church basement, well, different story
It’s because we’re the most caffeine forward denomination isn’t it?
February 19, 2026 at 1:32 AM
Yeah lol. It's been almost uniformly positive, but everybody there is like "my friend, this is not the sort of commiment flip we're used to seeing around here"
Did you go from LDS to Episcopalian? That’s gotta be one of the biggest vibe shifts possible in religion.
February 19, 2026 at 1:25 AM
I asked my episcopal priest if i had to do any classes to formally join or anything and was told "matt, you get course credit for life experience. just watch the guy next to you so you know when to stand up and sit down

if they gave me HOMEWORK I mighta bailed and become a presbyterian or something
my attorney says he's gonna be Catholic in two months and I said have you been going to classes and everything and he says

...there are classes?

2K did not seek and was not awarded exclusive rights. EA dropped out (among other reasons) because they were only interested in making a game if they could secure exclusive rights. EA doesn’t have a basketball game. They wanted the projection of exclusivity in order to justify the investment.
quick q i couldn’t find from earlier reporting. Did 2K win exclusive rights to NCAA teams or did EA just drop their game idea when 2K got rights?

VIDEO GAME NEWS:

As previously reported by Extra Points, Season 5 of NBA2K, which starts 2/20, will include current MBB and WBB athletes from 16 major programs.

It's the precursor to 2K getting more involved in college basketball IP and projects.

IP will be in MyTeam and MyCareer:

I'm just a dipshit nerd sportswriter. I do not profess to know how to fix the vileness of current american political culture. All I know is that for me, personally, I'll take advocacy of public virtue wherever I can get it. If that's from secular voices/institutions? Great. Churches? Thats great too
It’s hard to argue public Christian virtue is at all adequate in a Christian dominated system that has been ripped apart by self professed Christians since Reagan while not helping the poor, ignoring the sick, turning away the hungry and using god to attack others. Looks like god rewards the immoral
February 18, 2026 at 4:19 PM
In conclusion, American Christianity is a land of contrasts,,,,,
There's a massive and pretty obvious difference in the ways the camps of "Christianity as a means of control" and "Christianity as a means of freedom" talk about faith and government. Choosing to treat them all as the same is a choice!
February 18, 2026 at 4:08 PM
In my humble opinion, if we want to push back on the current political culture of trampling on the very concept of civic virtue, we're just gonna have to live with some people tying those virtues to their faith.

It's okay to talk about why a belief in Jesus makes you want to be a good person IMO

The Extra Points website is back up. Sorry there was no newsletter last night. Between getting back late from NY and the Beehiiv problems, I called it an early night. Doing a TON of EP Library work today but you'll have a good newsletter later, I promise.
dont love this development

In this household the answer is Albuquerque, even though the "correct" answer is probably Eat It or Amish Paradise
you are all fools the REAL music question that will cause intergenerational warfare on bluesky is actually: what is weird al's signature song?

I’m not too proud to admit I’ve thrown a punch in Mormon church basketball
let's hear some more of these Olympic Moments, what's your greatest personal sports-related tantrum
Yinz guys are special writers and always make me laugh.......

This is beyond relatable

I rolled a bowling bowl across a parking lot and into the woods. I drove home in my bowling shoes. I haven't picked a ball up since. Almost 24 years.

good morning

after thinking about this more, I think the Sac State to the MAC math is riskier, but mangable, but MAC schools.

For Sacramento State? Well,,,,

So how does the math work behind this Sacramento State/MAC business?
This isn't like other conference realignment moves

New York's state-specific open records law is called FOIL, not FOIA. Folks pay me the big bucks so I can localize my lectures

(and by paid the big bucks, I'm not paid lol)
Out of any word on your phone to autocorrect, it picked FOIA? And also made you an anarchist?
February 17, 2026 at 4:31 PM
I am here to actually talk a little shop with some of their athletic department staff (about stuff like jerey patches and sponsorship sales), but MOSTLY I'm here to guest lecture at a few journalism/comms classes and teach some underclassmen how to FOIL government agencies.

Best part of my gig imo
Okay but I have to ask what brings you to St. Bonaventure

This place looks old as hell

(Complimentary)

Might be the same seats that Bob Lanier used
