Hello Bluesky! My name is Ben but my old friends call me LOAF. I’m best known for helping Chris Roberts dream up Star Citizen but I mostly skeet about Wing Commander esoterica and my life with two wonderful black cats and beautiful wife Ali (plus dumb jokes and nonsense about other media I love).
Weird day at the licensing expo.

Here's a wonderful Wing Commander III PlayStation ad discovered by @xwinggameseries.bsky.social! It's fascinating how the marketing totally changed the identity for Japan; it looks so much more colorful and fun.

Fasnachts for Fat Tuesday 🍩

Fasnachts (a type of donut) are the traditional Shrove Tuesday treat in Central Pennsylvania; a way to use up the sugar and lard before Lent.

My wife has beautiful hand painted objects for sale at her Etsy store. Each one is exquisite and unique and *could be adorning your home or that of a loved one right now*. What on earth are you waiting for?
I have hand-painted wood items in my Etsy shop, and several of them have a mysterious cat!

I subscribed to the Hess Truck subreddit earlier and then for the first time ever the algorithm started spitting endless horrifying men’s rights group suggestions at me.

Deep Impact: Robert Duvall’s soft-spoken geriatric former moonwalker who gets sent back to space to nuke a comet is somehow the most rebatable character in the movie.

People are saying we need to ‘listen to the angels of our better nature’, that now is not the time for violent riots or vicious beatings. That that sort of thing just ‘plays into their hands’. Well, I say to hell with all that: it’s time we send a message to LEGO that we do not want Smart Bricks.

I got some of my #Babylon5 Civilian and Raider ships painted the other day, after finally getting successful test prints off the latest set of models! Here is a Civilian Freighter, Civilian Tanker, and Raider Schooner. The Schooner has 12 Delta-V fighters docked to it, similar to the Strike Carrier.

All that posting about medals got me thinking about Wing Commander I's ribbon system. So I made this chart! Turns out the internet has been getting the fighter qualification and service ribbons swapped because of a barely noticed bug (the game awards you the five mission ribbon after one mission).

Here's the rotoscoped kiss from Wing Commander II! This could be played over any background and I think it gets used three times: after Spirit dies, at the end of the game when you're reinstated as Colonel and then once more in Special Operations 2 after you rescue Angel.

I've got a tape from 1997 that one of the producers on Wing Commander Prophecy shot at ECTS (or E3?) to bring back and show the team back in Austin the competition. Colony Wars is the big focus!
So I've been mucking around with Duckstation's 16:9 rendering mode and it turns out that Colony Wars, a classic PSX space shooter in the realm of Wing Commander, not only works really well in 16:9 but also has enough extra geometry in the interface that I'd believe you if you said it was intended.

This is super disappointing for a show I’ve loved to this point. The crumminess of AI art aside, this should have been a slam dunk way to celebrate Star Trek’s long, wonderful history of tie-in comics. Instead our grandkids have one more thing to rework in the remastered version come 2066.
They could have done something cool, like had a one shot tie-in book that IDW actually published to accompany the episode as a fun bit of multimedia synergy, but instead we got this trash.
