Can't think of many films (in this case a miniseries) that have wrestled more seriously with the trials and tribulations of political violence than Carlos. And it was such a pleasure to have the journalist @noahhurowitz.bsky.social (author of El Chapo) on the show to make sense of the work.

Extraordinary documentary, and such a pleasure having someone as knowledgeable as @sandipto.bsky.social on the show with @vanjackson.bsky.social and I to navigate its angles. Check it out!

We covered this during my guest appearance on @bangbang1492.bsky.social podcast with Three Kings. Saddam invaded Kuwait partially because he could not pay for the bread, circuses and services needed to maintain rule in addition to needing to pay back his creditors.

the basic rule of dictatorships is there are some people you cannot fuck over, you can't survive everyone being unhappy all the time, if you keep your people happy you can ride out discontent but letting it get that far is already a major fuck up!

Another moment where I wish a vid or podcast had been an article. I recently tried to watch Exodus, which I'd heard was hugely influential when it came out. It's a shockingly awful movie, for itself and not just its politics, and I bet this is really interesting - if you can do video/audio.

Such a pleasure to talk to @vanjackson.bsky.social and the journalist @davidgrossman.bsky.social (one of my favorite mutuals) on a film that tells us a lot about our current moment. Check it out!
