The most eloquent of memorials.

A forest full of great granite blocks, each about three feet by eight feet & two feet thick. I did not prepare words for this, just as I was not prepared on the morning I came across this field of stone in a forest at the entry to a South Carolina State Park near Greenwood.

These were the stones about to be cut, chiseled & worked into place to build a grand archway entrance into Lake Greenwood State Park, in early December 1941. But that archway never came to pass.

For on December 7th, 1941, Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. The hundreds of young men in the Civilian Conservation Corps on this very ground were called back to headquarters. They left their work in the forest, to be told that the CCC was then decommisioned. They were asked to report to duty at various sites around the state for active service, as America had declared war.

They did so, almost to the man.

The State of South Carolina, to commemorate their enlistment, enacted a law that would leave every stone in place, in memory of these young men. To this day, the entry to the Lake Greenwood State Park is just a few rows of great granite blocks. No one knows the fate of these men, who moved en masse into active duty.

I was not prepared for this on the day I arrived. There is no way to describe the feeling that came upon me as I read the words about these young men shipping off to war. I could only stand there, and begin to observe the quantity of stone that stretched out before me. Henge stones, each and every one.

Today, we are experiencing a great loss of who we are as a nation, led by shallow, caustic creatures bearing little resemblance to men or women. They are invertebrates, possibly even less so, and their comprehension is that of an amoeba compared to the spirit of these young men.

I do not know if my home state will continue to honor those men in this way, I wish to believe they will, but we are failing fast. I hope these stones outweigh the greed of the bastards who are now claiming leadership.

Day 14 #SciArtSeptember prompt is mimic. 🧪🐡 This print shows a great little pollinator in the garden: a transverse-banded flower fly (Eristalis transversa) on Echinacea purpurea or purple coneflower. Because of its yellow stripes, tendency to hover (it’s a hover fly after all) and love of flowers 🧵

As described this is my 8” x 10” print showing the centre of a purple echinacea flower. The centre of the flower is orange with black outlines and some yellow bits and occupies the lower right corner. Radiating out are several pink and violet petals. The background is green. On top of the centre of the flower is a transverse-banded flower fly facing the lower right corner. It is yellow and black striped with translucent wings and red-brown eyes.

Strongly radioactive cuprosklodowskite gets its name from sklodowskite & Marie Skłodowska-Curie.

Ikaite occurs in truly spectacular towers or columns (up to 18 m) growing out of the Ikka Fjord in SW Greenland, floor towards the surface. As a marine geophysicist I have to vote for it. #MinCup25
