it's still winter outside, and I've been listening to an older record from our friend Richard, who passed away in September 2023. Thinking about how the winter is cold and dark and sad, and how beautiful this song makes it feel all the same.

Wrote a poem for the show at stadium ❣️
A photo of a hand holding a black and white print out that says:

Seeds Start in the Dark

STADIUM

Digging the dirt out from under your fingernails

Draw lines around something and see how much life you can fill it with, how much pollen and nectar, how many centipedes and sparrows and squirrels and worms — flamboyant, ornamental, edible. Build one small room and make it beautiful in spite of the winter wind, the snow up to your calves, the landfill leaking into the groundwater.

Believe in flowers next to the chicken rendering plant, beside the factories making matches, making life jackets, making mayonnaise, making windshield wipers. Grow them out of the pain in your chest cavity, the pried open pit of your stomach lining, the air and the exhaust, the world threaded through you, the death in each breath, the dust and the soil and the oil and the micro plastics.

Slowness, surprises, some semblance of smallness, control, total lack of control, loving something, lowering yourself to the ground. You’re on your knees.

BREAKING: A federal court temporarily blocked President Trump’s executive order aiming to restrict access to gender-affirming medical care for transgender people under age 19 nationwide.

This is a major victory for our freedom to access life-saving care.

Digging around in some old hard drives turned up this scan of a t-shirt I made as part of a project where I wore a different text-based t-shirt every day for a year, 2012 – 2013

The shirt reads: because the problem of representation has everywhere replaced the question of how to use our lives

Soroush sent me this photo of an eastern comma butterfly that emerged from my woven grass work “thread breath, earth hair” in the weeks after it was installed at the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery 😍

also love this 1,100 year old (930 CE) sock that was found buried in the backyard of a viking settlement in the UK, made using a nålbinding stitch — the band around the ankle was dyed (red) with madder, with no dye in the rest of the sock

I know, right?? They’re thought to have been designed to be worn with sandals 🩴🩴

reading about nålbinding last year, I found this amazing photo of ~1500 year old socks (300-500 CE) from Egypt, and I don’t know why I find them comforting, but I do 🧦🧦 as a fabric creation technique, nålbinding predates both knitting and crochet, with the oldest known fragment dating from 6500 BCE
