i wrote a quick-play fighting game called FOOD FIGHT! for my zine D20BA 3: TOKYO DRIFT as part of d20 zine jam 2025 :-) in FOOD FIGHT!, two players draft teams of food people and make them face off in combat

FOOD FIGHT!

FOOD FIGHT! is a quick-play fighting game for two players. each player drafts a party of FOOD FIGHT!ers, then they face off in combat.

THE DRAFT:
each player opens a food delivery app of their choice. each roll a d10 four times.

ROLL 1: choosing a category from the home page
on the home page of your app, go as many categories down as you’ve rolled, ignoring non-food stores and grocery stores.
ROLL 2: choosing a restaurant from the category
within your category, choose the restaurant that corresponds with the number you’ve rolled.
ROLL 3: choosing a menu section in the restaurant
from the scroll-across menu in the restaurant, choose the section that corresponds with the number you’ve rolled. if the number is bigger than the amount of options, either reroll or loop back to the start of the menu until you’ve finished counting.
ROLL 4: choosing a meal
within the section, choose the meal that corresponds with the number you’ve rolled. if the number is bigger than the amount of options, either reroll or loop back to the start of the section until you’ve finished counting.

when you’ve landed on a meal, break it down into its components. each component will become a member of your party. a party has 5 members in total— if your meal has too many components, choose your 5 favorites; too few, reroll rolls 3 and 4 until you have 5 members.

Lily ends up on a spicy chicken sandwich from a fast food place. The components of the sandwich are spicy pepper sauce, pickles, a chicken filet, and a potato roll. They need one more thing to round out their party, so they reroll menu section and meal. They land on a fish sandwich, so they just choose the fish filet.

Dove lands on a Caribbean restaurant. He initially lands on beef patties, so he rerolls menu section and meal until he additionally gets fried dumplings, rice & peas, fried codfish, and brown stew chicken, giving him a full party.

GIVE THEM LIFE:
identify the food group for each member of each player’s party. if a member could reasonably be in multiple food groups, they can be in multiple.

FOOD GROUPS:
carbs: strong against veggies
veggies: strong against sweets
sweets: strong against meat
meat: strong against dairy
dairy: strong against fruits
fruits: strong against carbs

then, choose classes for each member of each player’s party. each member gets one class.

CLASSES:
rogue: strong against mage
mage: strong against fighter
fighter: strong against rogue

finally, give each member of your party a name, preferably on theme with the type of food they are. be sure to write names, food groups, and classes somewhere where both players can see.

Lily’s party consists of Rika, a spicy pepper sauce vegetable rogue; Vinny, a pickle vegetable mage; Junior, a chicken filet meat/carbs fighter; Tate, a potato roll carbs fighter; and Marlin, a fish filet meat/carbs rogue.

Dove’s party consists of Trisha, a beef patty meat/carbs fighter; Kned, a fried dumpling carbs mage; Sidney, a rice & peas veggie/carbs rogue; Guppy, a fried codfish meat/carbs fighter; and Stewart, a brown stew chicken veggie/meat mage.

THE FIGHT:
one player declares heads or tails, then flips a coin. if that player called it, they go first. if not, the other player goes first.

every member of each player’s party has 25 Macros each. the player that goes first chooses a member of their party to attack a member of the other party. the attacking player rolls a d10, then adds any applicable strengths (each strength adds +1 to your damage). take the final number. the attacked member loses that number of Macros. a member goes down when they hit 0 Macros.

Dove goes first. Trisha attacks Rika. He rolls a 3. Carbs are strong against veggies, and fighters are strong against rogues, so a total of 5 Macros are lost. Rika is now at 20 Macros.

Lily goes next. Vinny attacks Guppy. They roll a 9. Mages are strong against fighters, so a total of 10 Macros are lost. Guppy is now at 15 Macros.

there are 7 rounds, each player taking 1 turn per round. at the end of 7 rounds, the player with the most members still standing wins. if no members have gone down yet, keep playing until one does.
