Found this E3 2004 gem in the storage bin today. No idea if stuff like this is valuable, but sure is cool.

Dr. Demento is retiring, which is news in that I thought he was dead. But of course he has a website, and of course that site is using tech from 1997, and OF COURSE it’s got an archive of *every Dr. Demento episode*

Anyway a big fuck yeah to Dr. Demento and his demented website

Leif was my colleague at Apple. We’ve been completely devastated by his sudden passing, and I haven’t had the wherewithal to say much about it. This is a wonderful piece about a talented, hardworking, and just totally unique person, and you should read it.

Anyway this is all to say that the loss of Polygon and Giant Bomb is devastating not only because I know and love people who are suddenly unemployed. It’s devastating because the continuing deterioration of this essential industry function will rob us all of beautiful art we didn’t see coming.

I’m nearing 30 years of professional work in gaming, and I owe it all to my time spent in the trenches of game sites. And so many other do too. Games like Spider-Man and Hades were masterminded by former journos. Countless community managers got their start reviewing RPGs. The Game Awards!

There are a lot of ways into the games industry; for me, it was journalism. Writing reviews, attending events, interviewing devs—it’s a crash course in the business, and one of the few ways in that feels accessible to everyone.

It’s gut-wrenching watching this pipeline vanish in real-time.

This is wonderful news!

But also I am a bit skeptical that their new owners—who have yet to launch their big F2P shooter—will actually be able to sustain that effort, any other upcoming projects, and a combo website/print mag. That’s…a lot?

Hope it all works out!

It feels like end times in LA. So many friends have lost homes or have been evacuated with no idea if their house will be there whenever they come back, I lost count. It’s hard to wrap your head around the scope of this. And we all feel helpless. Trying to stay positive but man, this is rough.

Also for LA peeps: Watch Duty is a must-have app for a night like this. Informative, up to date, indispensable. Often faster than emergency services when it comes to evac orders.

Can’t stress how chaotic it feels in LA tonight. Palisades burning down, fire in Altadena spreading quickly, smaller fires popping up randomly, power outages, the threat of evacuation looming for basically everyone. Gonna be a long night. Check in on your LA friends - they’re definitely awake.
