Great to see that so many people are joining bsky. A little hard to sort the people I know from followers via starter pack so if you joined recently and know me (IRL or thru the old place/other networks) pls like, comment or dm so I don't miss you!

Do you have a favorite academic book cover?

Am a fan of the Vibe Check podcast just to get to listen to these 3 great friends who are super smart, caring, knowledgeable, and love dogs and music and poetry.

And if you need a super cathartic, absolute takedown of Bari Weiss today, go to about 35 min

I think…people’s obsession with “a cause”…is precisely because autism’s genetic randomness is hard to stratify by social class……………..

THERE. ARE. NO. 'CAUSES'. OF. AUTISM.

(other than being born as a member of Homo sapiens, which is a huge risk factor for turning out to be Autistic).

truly. the book is a model for me as a non autistic person writing about neurodiversity, for exactly those reasons.

Agree. I am a bumbling (clumsy/disorganized) woman Prof and I don't think it adds positively to my profile. Margaret Price actually writes about this in the brilliant Mad at School about mental disability & academia.

People will say the younger generations aren't tough but I'm at an outdoor concert where it's upward of 80 F and people are wearing sweatshirts and tweed jackets.

Horrors for my perimenopausal eyes.

I'm thinking of this piece I wrote way back in June 2014, about the problematic assumption that when you're a starting PhD student or PGR who is disabled, you'll know what access support you'll need, even though you've never done a research degree before

The Adjusted PhD: What Accommodations Work(ed) For You?
Today I initiated conversations with my new institutional home’s Disability Support Services.  As a disabled postgraduate researcher returning to PhD study after a previous unsuccessful attem…

We're having a whole emergency town hall about it based on student demands and I'm so excited / relieved

I've gotten so many spam calls lately I've started answering them to see what kind of calls they are. Scary thing is not knowing if this corny sounding dude is just really skilled at trying to turn this conversation around to get my personal info, or if that dude is a bot that is very good at that.

Oh I didn't know this!

When creating PDFs, avoid using "Print to PDF." A screen reader user may still be able to access the text of PDFs created this way, but heading structure, alternative text, and any other tag structure will be lost. Using "Save As" or "Export" can preserve these tags.

It's been interesting to read, and I have it set up as "pick 2" assignment (pick 2 out of a possible 6 weeks to do this) so they come in small batches that help me get to know them a little more since I can spend more time, plus they have a bit of personality writing-wise.

in my search for more writing that is less AI susceptible and engaging in general, I had a new type of assignment this semester - "week in review," where students look back over class notes, slides, and our online whiteboard to summarize what we discussed and their assessment of what they learned.

I had one colleague who teaches "high risk" type material, and they have a private convo with students who ask for this about the dangers of posting, doxing etc.

My syllabus says that recordings are for private use and cannot be distributed without consent of all present. Many disability offices have boilerplate language on this.
besswww.bsky.social
I'm skeptical too for reasons of state politics, but what about the university policy that class recordings are supposed to be for personal use only?

Texas A&M does. Do you think that will have any consequences in that case? I'd say no

My condolences Aparna. I'm so sorry for your loss. May your Wednesday be filled with sweet memories.

Fwiw apparently it is a sophomore class, not a freshman one - my mistake. Lots of opportunities to get things wrong out there, including my tone! I'm a fan of students reading all kinds of texts that they aren't previously familiar with or don't agree with in college, is all I was saying.

Don't say pink... All I can remember is the awful pink dress she wears in some video about what a terrible socialist Zohran Mamdani is

Actually part of their core curriculum along with the bible. It's called education.

I was being too tongue in cheek- that's who I meant (though there are probably others too)

Yes, a rather well known core curriculum and I guarantee there are some Columbia grads in the FP staff who know that
