Did you know each emoji has a coded description that gets read aloud by screen readers? This demo by Alexa Heinrich shows what happens when a screen reader encounters a post that uses an emoji to function as a bullet point.

People with glasses and contacts have to realize that we have a disability that just happens to be highly accommodated for in modern society and that accommodation is the only reason why poor eyesight is not considered a disability.

And this number is from SIX years ago. We KNOW that online shopping has dramatically increased over that time. I wonder what the revenue lost would be today...? 🤔
71% of disabled people abandon websites that present access barriers. That’s a yearly loss of £17.1 billion of revenue in the UK alone.

If your WCAG testing is only axe / ARC / WAVE / EAAC, not only are you only testing ~30% of WCAG, but my own 2023 testing shows they catch <15% of issues:

Manual testing is still a thing. Especially if bumping into ``.

Comparing Manual and Free Automated WCAG Reviews
Automated accessibility testing tools cannot test 100% of WCAG. This position is not controversial. Other than overlay vendors, no automated tool maker makes that claim. This is partly because WCAG is...

Make sure that interactive elements that can be accessed by using a mouse, pen, trackpad or touch are at least 24 by 24 CSS pixels. This helps people with low vision and/or limited motor control select the intended element without accidentally selecting nearby elements.

PDF tags provide a hidden, structured representation of PDF content that is presented to screen readers. Not all applications support good PDF tag structure, but InDesign, Word, and PowerPoint can. WebAIM has more information on preserving these tags.

A few tips for making BlueSky a more accessible place.

Please add alt text to images.

Yes, this is the one everyone kind of knows about, but worth flagging.

By all means add some extra context or jokes to it and be creative but please put the actual image description at the beginning.

You have to be f'ing kidding... Wix requires at least a $36/mo account to use a domain you have registered elsewhere -- even if you are using Wix nameservers?
Migrated a client's domain in prep for a launch in a few weeks without knowing this weird requirement. 🤦🏼‍♀️

Minimizing cognitive load absolutely helps people with cognitive disabilities, but also many of the rest of us who are distracted and tired most of the time. Accessibility improvements almost always improve user experience FOR EVERYONE!
Cognitive load refers to how much working memory or short-term memory someone is using at a time. Minimizing the cognitive load it takes to use your site makes it more accessible for people with cognitive disabilities. Limit what you're asking users to remember to use your site.

Don't use color alone to convey information. Marking required fields by only using colored labels won't help people who use screen readers or who can't distinguish colors. If using color, also add text like asterisks and/or "required."
