Es ist sehr schön in Mainz. Und man kann hier - ich spreche aus Erfahrung - fantastisch historisch forschen (und wer mag auch: lehren).

The example of Boehringer demonstrates that even Germany's leading industries that appeared to be focused on Europe, such as the pharmaceutical industry, were embedded in global commodity chains that where shaped by colonial and postcolonial structures.

In the 20th century, the company also operated its own plantations, for example in the Dutch East Indies, but above all in the Belgian Congo, where the company continued to produce raw materials even after the colony gained independence.

Boehringer was one of the largest producers of quinine, which was widely used as an anti-malarial drug. Given its central role, Boehringer maintained close connections to the regions where the raw material, cinchona bark, originated: South America and Southeast Asia.

What has been left out of this story is that most pharmaceuticals that were produced until the mid 20th century were not solely synthesized, but were based on natural ressources - many of which came from the Global South.

Our key argument is, that the story of one of Germany's key industries from 1870-1950, the pharmaceutical industry, has been written as eurocentric story of scientific progress.

Let me briefly summarize this article by Tristan Oestermann ( @zzfpotsdam.bsky.social ) and me:

In this article we're tracing the global entanglements of German pharmaceutical company Boehringer Mannheim, one of the largest producers of quinine in the 19th and 20th century.

So this is out now:

"Intro: Camp Memories in Africa and beyond"

my intro to a special issue on #memorystudies and the contested memorialization of #camps in #africa and beyond

@histodons

in Africa and beyond
Jochen Lingelbach
University of Bayreuth, Germany
Abstract
Introducing the special issue on the memorialization of camps in Africa and beyond, this text discusses key
questions of memory studies and the global history of encampment. Whatever their purpose, all camps
are meant to be exceptional, transitory and temporary. Camps are often connected to contested histories
and memorialization efforts by former inmates or others can lead to controversies and struggles over its
interpretation. Building on a range of empirical examples from Africa and beyond, dealing with camps ranging
from the most coercive to the benevolent and from the beginning of the twentieth century until today, this
special issue invites a comparative, globally entangled and actor-centred view on camp memorialization.

I was delighted to co-host the workshop “What do we (not) know about
German colonialism in Tanzania?” together with @seitzramona.bsky.social at the #bfuturefestival

The discussions reflected how important it is to continue uncovering & rethinking shared colonial histories.
