There will be lots of weather, some photography, and random brain dumps!
I'm not expecting any major severe weather tonight.

However, I do have a live stream running with NOAA All-Hazards Radio in the Twin Cities as the soundtrack and a live radar loop and realtime warning updates.

Keep in mind - YT is delayed 15-30 seconds!

Quick update at 4am: the entire Metro is now in a Winter Storm WARNING for 4-7" of snow and winds up to 40mph. Snow totals could go vary +/- 3".

All in all, the transition from rain to snow looks to be around 7p.

The Wednesday morning commute looks to be quite tough.

Wow, they tell you that rotator cuff surgery is super painful. They lied. It's worse than that. I have a high pain tolerance and the first 48 hours were so damn painful.

Thankfully, it's settled down into the "chronic" pain of healing. I'm able to use my left hand fro typing but that's about it.

Hey everyone! So, I'm moving all my weather content to its own feed. @blacksheepwx.bsky.social I'm currently working on setting up a video podcast but it's been a minute since I did any video production work. Once I have the podcast ready to go, I'll be posting it to YouTube and Peertube. #mnwx

Common abbreviations in my weather (wx) posts:

Models:

ECMWF (Euro) - European weather model
CMC (Canadian) - model
GFS (US) - US model
GEFS (US) - blend of all the GFS members
NAM (US) - a different US model
HRRR (US) - High Resolution Rapid Refresh model

WX - abbreviation for weather

Summary: The NWS Winter Storm Watch is appropriate - this will be one of the biggest snows of the winter so far.

I'll post an update around 2000 once the new model runs are in and I've had a chance to look them over.

All three models are showing signs of speeding up the system which would bring lower totals area wide. The official NWS forecast is 5-7". I think this is a bit optimistic and I'm looking at 3-5" with a narrow band of 5-7" somewhere. The narrow band will be driven by processes within the storm.

The Euro also keeps the system moving through slower than the US/Canadian models as well.

The differences make a sizeable difference in the amount of snow expected.

As it stands now: the Euro would bring 6-8" of snow across the Metro. The US/Canadian would only give us 4-6".

Winter Storm Update - Thu 6 Feb 2025 14:30

The models are having their usual issues with trying to figure out the amount of moisture getting into the system.

The Euro model is keeping around a half-inch of precipitable water but the US and Canadian models show closer to a third of an inch. 1/

I'm thinking about starting a metro weather forecast/discussion podcast on YouTube. It would be a daily podcast with live coverage during severe weather events. How much interest is there in this? #mnwx #mspwx #wx #weather

Hey gang! Sorry about the lack of weather news or anything else for that matter. A couple of weeks ago, I injured my left shoulder which hasn't improved. MRI done. Those results led my orthopedic doc is doing surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff which will leave me with 4-6 months of recovery.

Damnit!

As I was about to step away from the computer: The NWS has put the Twin Cities Metro under a WINTER STORM WARNING from midnight (06Z) Thursday to midnight (06Z) Friday.

Still 5-7" snow followed by strong winds with blowing and drifting.

Plan ahead for the morning commute! #mnwx #weather

Well, well, well...

The 12pm (18Z) models are in and the forecast seems to be locking in.

Metro forecast: 5-7" of snow starting tonight. Heaviest snow looks to fall during the morning rush on Thursday and winds will pick up dramatically in the afternoon making blowing snow likely. #mnwx #weather

Thankfully, I've recovered for the most part. I'll still having vision problems and the occasional vertigo. It'll be another week from today until the steroid after effects will be over. At least the biggest issues with that are minor (super dry mouth!) 2/2 #ms #disability

Sorry I've been MIA for a few days. The stress of my father's condition, my finances, and trying to figure out how to afford to travel to be with dad for the holidays was enough to trigger a full-on MS flare. I was in the hospital Sunday night and have been on steroids all week. 1/ #ms #disability

They can go eat a bag full of shit.

Sorry for no postings for a few days. It was a busy weekend and last night I had a sudden departure from normal in my MS symptoms and just spent 18 hours in the emergency room. Feeling much better but I'm still wiped out.
