Anyone who has ever done IT (or has elderly parents) feels this in their bones

While providing tech support for my FIL:

FIL: What's that screen?

ME: The terminal. You should never use it.

FIL: Never?

ME: So you know how I'm allowed to watch you open the electrical panel and swap out breakers, but I'm not allowed to ever open up it myself?

FIL: Ah! I understand, thank you.
bigblueguitar.bsky.social
Yes. Including atheists, which is what I was getting at.
bigblueguitar.bsky.social
That is not my premise, and I challenge you to show me where I said anything beyond "there is an arrogance reflected in atheists' surety of their beliefs." Nothing of disrespect or cruelty.
bigblueguitar.bsky.social
I mean, my position is based on my ignorance, but go off I guess
bigblueguitar.bsky.social
No. It doesn't. But there seems to be no shortage of vocal atheists who don't feel the same.
bigblueguitar.bsky.social
And I don't need it to be epistemologically sound! My only concern is that the person was moved by their experience, even if I didn't share it.
bigblueguitar.bsky.social
Sure I am. If someone tells me, "I saw my dead grandmother and she spoke to me," I can share the comfort they might feel from that knowledge, without having to say, "No you didn't there are no ghosts."
bigblueguitar.bsky.social
If you're automatically connecting religious folks to racists, I'm not sure what else to say. Yeah, religious people do horrible things. They even do it in the name of religion. But if you're just going to return prejudice with prejudice, you've proven my point.
bigblueguitar.bsky.social
No. I'm an agnostic. I accept that there are people who have sincere spiritual and religious experiences, even if I myself do not.
bigblueguitar.bsky.social
I mean, I take threats against my queer ass seriously, so, yeah?

Have you ever met a religious person you respected? Or are they all beyond the pale? What about people who have sincere experiences that improve them? Should I just deny that out of hand because I don't have the same experience?
bigblueguitar.bsky.social
Silly Gnome. Where did I say you have to accept anything? Why do you think I'm a believer?
bigblueguitar.bsky.social
There it is! What makes you think I "don't believe in material reality"? Why are people who are religious, "silly?"

In point of fact, you couldn't be farther from the truth, as far as my beliefs.
bigblueguitar.bsky.social
I can accept that you believe that, and that's cool, but it is hardly a widely held belief amongst vocal atheists. Look at all the people insulting others for believing in a "sky daddy" or the thinly veiled derision for anyone "dumb" enough to be religious or spiritual. That's what I'm calling out.
bigblueguitar.bsky.social
It's a knowledge claim: I know that there are no gods, spirits, etc. Anyone who believes those things is wrong. That's the arrogance.
bigblueguitar.bsky.social
As a point of self-correction, it should be "theists" not "deists." Apparently I had early American religious movements on my brain.
bigblueguitar.bsky.social
But how do you know? How can you be so sure?
bigblueguitar.bsky.social
On what basis? How do you know your beliefs are the true ones? How can you be so sure?
bigblueguitar.bsky.social
AFAIC, being an atheist is an inherently arrogant position; it presumes an individual has the answers to some of our deepest questions. It's the mirror to deists who revile secular humanism. I consider being an agnostic the only respectful position for a nonreligious person: I doubt, but don't know

They said they wanted to dismantle the administrative state and now they're doing it. Pretty straightforward

Relieved she was released, but still disgusted she was taken

An update from WGN on Debbie Brockman: "Earlier today, a WGN-TV creative services employee was detained by ICE. She has since been released, and no charges were filed against her. Out of respect for her privacy, we will have no further statements about this incident.”

This morning, masked Border Patrol agents violently pinned a longtime WGN-TV producer to the ground after detaining another unidentified male in Chicago, eventually arresting her and hauling her off in an unmarked silver van.

It's like not all Latinx people are the same. Huh. Strange world, innit?
extremearturo.bsky.social
The way people are celebrating this Trumper who supports the killing of her own people off the coast of Latin America is wild to me. She is not who you think she is. Neither she nor Trump deserves the Nobel.

But what do I know? I've only been covering Venezuela for more than a decade.

Woot woot! All day long with this great news! I just love the taste of tangerine clown tears in the morning. 😏

"The administration is doing dumb things, this proves they will fail."

1. They are not as dumb as you think in the areas that matter to them: grabbing power.

2. Being dumb is a feature, not a bug, of authoritarianism. Hiring based on loyalty does that.

3. This thinking is what leads to inaction.
