Some thoughts about Discovery S2:
- Perfect example of why Star Trek works best as an episodic, problem-of-the-week show. Best part of this was the episode about Saru's planet--a plot that mattered to a character for personal reasons & was kind of self-contained.

Horse actors very obviously portraying the wrong breed, especially when it's plot-relevant.
#FilmSky, a quick question; what is the pettiest thing you have had to be annoyed at a film? I ask because I am watching The Gift from 2000, and the main character does divination with Zener Cards, which are not the same thing as Tarot at all. Why go for a more boring looking option?

Trying to convince my completionist brain that I don't need to watch Stranger Things 5 even though I watched the rest of the show...
I can just pretend they all died in the Upside Down, right?

I appreciate that season 2 Georgiou has adopted the DS9 Mirror Universe fashion sense. However, I don't approve of making noted icon Michelle Yeoh say lines like "We had defcon level fun together."

TNG: has a robot character for its entire run, makes him a core cast member, centres the best storylines of the show around him.
Discovery: has a robot character for 1 1/2 seasons, gives her zero lines until she gets the Evil Virus and is killed off in the same episode.

I've named my favourite movies, but here's a thread of my other Favourite Things of 2025 (as in, things I experienced for the first time during the past year--some are older than others).

Wrote about my 10 favourite movies of the year. It was hard to narrow down!
My Favourite Movies of 2025
2025 was a rough year, and not just because it killed Doctor Who (still hoping for a regeneration, but it’s not looking great at the moment). But it also had a higher-than-usual number of mov…

I'm not one of those people who think chicken soup can cure any disease...but I'm pretty sure soup dumplings can.

Rock musician, I guess? Although I don't usually think of Lestat having a real job other than "vampire."

Chimes of Midnight is peak Doctor Who, partly because it shares the timey-wimey horror and comedy unique to the show, but mostly because it's all about the importance of a single ordinary life. IMO that's the key to successful Who: a "nobody" who matters, to both the Doctor and the audience.

Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without a hefty dose of Eighth Doctor swag.

Finally done with Discovery S1. The modern era is, so far, not disproving my "9/11 permanently broke Star Trek" theory.

Skull of Sobek - The Doctor defeats an Egyptian crocodile god with the power of prayer. What was that RTD line about cultural appropriation? Story is pretty meh, but the writers have really nailed down the Doctor/Lucie banter at this point. I 🖤 them.

I'm glad The Running Man (2025) doesn't seem to be a big box office hit. I'd hate for it to make zines uncool.

I actually disagree. It's an *Advent* movie. Which means the right time to watch it is RIGHT NOW.

My hottest movie take is that I genuinely can't understand the appeal of the Avatar movies. I dislike plenty of popular movies, but usually I can understand why other people like them. Not so with the blue cat people series. They're like watching a 2003 Microsoft screensaver for 3 hours, to me.

The Death Collectors - If there's one type of scare Doctor Who has mastered, it's "a cheerful computer suddenly says something creepy." A nice, atmospheric horror story with solo Seven and a likeable one-off companion. The cute nods to his movie death are getting old, though. One per story, please!

I was homeschooled in a strict Evangelical household. The Princess Bride was one of the first Good Movies I was allowed to see. It rewired my brain and permanently adjusted the way I thought about storytelling. The raised-Christian kids of my generation owe so much to Rob Reiner.

Brave New Town - Did...did Stephen Moffat get the idea for Rory the Roman from this one? Anyway, it was an intriguing mystery and, like the Doctor, I ended up kicking myself for not identifying the alien involved sooner.
