Happy 20 Years since Jackie Tyler was nearly killed by a Christmas Tree.

Finally done with Discovery S1. The modern era is, so far, not disproving my "9/11 permanently broke Star Trek" theory.

Skull of Sobek - The Doctor defeats an Egyptian crocodile god with the power of prayer. What was that RTD line about cultural appropriation? Story is pretty meh, but the writers have really nailed down the Doctor/Lucie banter at this point. I 🖤 them.

I'm glad The Running Man (2025) doesn't seem to be a big box office hit. I'd hate for it to make zines uncool.

I actually disagree. It's an *Advent* movie. Which means the right time to watch it is RIGHT NOW.

My hottest movie take is that I genuinely can't understand the appeal of the Avatar movies. I dislike plenty of popular movies, but usually I can understand why other people like them. Not so with the blue cat people series. They're like watching a 2003 Microsoft screensaver for 3 hours, to me.

The Death Collectors - If there's one type of scare Doctor Who has mastered, it's "a cheerful computer suddenly says something creepy." A nice, atmospheric horror story with solo Seven and a likeable one-off companion. The cute nods to his movie death are getting old, though. One per story, please!

I was homeschooled in a strict Evangelical household. The Princess Bride was one of the first Good Movies I was allowed to see. It rewired my brain and permanently adjusted the way I thought about storytelling. The raised-Christian kids of my generation owe so much to Rob Reiner.

Wrote about Wake Up Dead Man because it's not every day I have a spiritual experience at the movies.

The Mystery of Grace: A Wake Up Dead Man Review
This truly has been a historic year for the Gothic aesthetic in cinema. It’s even managed to creep into Rian Johnson’s latest cozy mystery! “A true locked-room mystery…the h…

Brave New Town - Did...did Stephen Moffat get the idea for Rory the Roman from this one? Anyway, it was an intriguing mystery and, like the Doctor, I ended up kicking myself for not identifying the alien involved sooner.

So many. But there's a poem I read in college, which I haven't been able to find again because I don't remember the title or the author (I believe it was a female contemporary of Sylvia Plath), and the last lines were:

"Nor do poets weep
So fascinated are we by the prosody of pain."
Which lines of poetry live rent-free in your head?

Max Warp - Breezy little murder mystery (where no one actually gets murdered). Always love the Doctor in detective mode. And some nice jabs at Those Types of TV personalities, from back when they weren't running the entire world. Ah, nostalgia...

Dead London - The faster pace of his new episodes makes Eight look like the smartest Doctor. I could imagine his predecessors taking an entire serial to work out the illusion here. A good time with an interesting new alien, who probably isn't gone for good.

Assassin in the Limelight - Often I think Doctor Who should set more historicals outside of England--and then I remember what the historicals set in *my* country are like, and I reconsider.
Six and Evelyn are the only redeeming factors for this one. I wish Knox actually died in it.

In a first for me, I've skipped a monthly Big Finish Doctor Who story. I just can't justify spending money on something called "The Dark Husband" unless the reviews are stellar--and they are not. So it's on to the next one!

It's Doctor Who's anniversary, so I'm rewatching a favourite. For some reason, the way Peter Davison says "This is a mockery of justice" has been in my head all year.
No idea why...

Finally catching up on post-Abrams movie Star Trek, starting with Discovery.
I think I would normally be into the Klingon plot, but I'm too distracted by how miserable the actors must be, trying to speak and emote in a fake language through all that fake teeth.

The Condemned - They've dragged Charley back to be a Six companion, and I can't even be mad because this was great. The alien murder mystery kept me guessing the whole time, Six was in fine problem-solving form, and I love the "stealth invasion" that turns a guy into a house.

Frankenstein (2025) gets more beautiful every time I watch it.
"Forgive yourself into existence" ugh. 🖤

Bride of Peladon - Can't believe they gave Erimem the Leela exit. SMH, she had potential, but never grew into it. The story overall is overstuffed, cheesy, but occasionally fun--typical for a Peladon adventure. Sutekh's sister is even more pathetic than him. RIP. #BigFinishDoctorWho

I hear they're having trouble finding a way to bring James Bond back from the dead.
Guys, I have an idea that could save Bond and Doctor Who at the same time...
