@jodyallair.bsky.social and I just returned from leading one of our most memorable pelagic boat trips ever for Eagle-Eye Tours, out of Tofino, BC. The Laysan Albatross stole the show and hung around so long that we literally had to tear ourselves away from it! #birds #pelagic #albatross #seabirds
Laysan Albatross floats on the water. It is a large mostly white seabird with a brown back, pink bill, and hazy dark eyeshadow. Cassin's Auklet strikes a pose on the water. This tiny grey bird has a uniquely shaped sharp bill and white check above the eye. A Pink-footed Shearwater takes off from the water after resting on a kelp bed. It is mostly grey and white with a pink bill. A Black-footed Albatross fly by. This large seabird is mostly grey-brown with a white vent, rump, and pale face.

Tomorrow is #OctoberBigDay! The simple act of volunteer scientists birding and submitting their lists to eBird all at the same time, produces a powerful dataset that helps us learn about bird migration timing and more! Here's a late migrating Oct #NorthernYellowWarbler that is heading to C. America.

So cool to visit the Motus workshop at Birds Canada headquarters. The Motus community is studying the movement of birds, bats and insects. This tiny radio telemetry device will fit on a Monarch butterfly 😲 #invertebrates #birds 🌿 www.birdscanada.org/bird-science...
Brown wood-sided building with a wi Dow and a door. Sign above the door says, “Motus Workshop and Research Laboratory”. Tiny antenna with a rectangular box on the end. The whole thing is on an open hand and is about 5cm long. Orange and black butterfly on purple flowers.

A fall coloured yellow-rumped warbler blends in with a brown shrub. The only real pop of colour ar the red berries and a wee bit of yellow on the bird.

This short documentary, “L'Oiseau Papillon" by Frank Neveu looks interesting based on the trailer. Three years of work to gather the footage! It’s available from Salamadre.tv (subscription) www.youtube.com/watch?v=n_Rh...

Meet the Wallcreeper!🧱🐦

From the Alps to the Himalayas, this mountain-dwelling bird is renowned for its skilled climbing of rock faces.🏔️

Within crevices, they build a nest from moss and grass ready for the female to lay 3-5 eggs.

Meet the Semipalmated Sandpiper! This tiny shorebird is about the size of a sparrow and makes one of the most impressive migrations in the bird world.

If you come across these remarkable travellers along the shoreline this summer, be sure to share the shore!

Yellowlegs marsh meet-up! I love it when the Lesser (L) and Greater (R) Yellowlegs line up for comparison. Can you see the differences? #birds
Two wading birds stand beside each other in shallow water facing left. They both have brown backs and wings, white chest and belly, straight beaks and bright yellow legs, but the bird on the left is a bit smaller and has a shorter beak.

Right?! If only they would do it more often!

Not sure what you're up to, but there are currently thousands of shorebirds moving south through the #pacificnorthwest at the moment. These first cycle Western (L) and Semipalmated (R) sandpipers wanted to demonstrate how bill length can help tell them apart. #birds #birdphotography #migration

A wonderfully illustrated writeup about exploring southern #Saskatchewan and the work @birdscanada.bsky.social is doing alongside partners and ranchers to protect the remaining grasslands habitat. If only more people knew how precious and fragile this part of the country really is!

Sadly, the muskox in the southern parts of Victoria Island were hit hard by a bovine illness so I haven't seen them there. 😥

Still lots of time to do something about that!
