Blanchet House & Farm

A free cafe and transitional shelter in Portland with an addiction recovery farm in Carlton. Open Mon-Sat. Volunteers needed. BlanchetHouse.org
Pinned
Since 1952, Blanchet House has been offering free meals, clothes, transitional housing, and community to Portlanders.
Blanchet House is concerned by recent federal cuts to mental health and addiction services. We see every day how trauma and mental illness can lead to substance use, suffering, and homelessness, and how easy access to care keeps people housed. Nonprofits cannot replace a strong public safety net.

Brittany offered to make new table centerpieces for the cafe. Even simple, artificial flowers send a clear message to everyone who walks in. You matter here. You deserve beauty, care, and respect. Thanks, Brittany. If you're interested in taking on the centerpieces one month, please email us.

These two pups picked up new winter coats and supplies today at Blanchet House’s monthly supply and vet advice clinic. Vets Dr. Mack and Dr. Crabbe host the clinic each in our garage. Pets are important to our guests, and we want to make sure everyone can give their beloved animal what they need.

Portland’s busiest free café, Blanchet House of Hospitality, has served in Old Town since 1952. There have always been, and there will always be, people in need of a helping hand.

Liking and sharing this video supports our work.

Every Saturday from 11:30-12:30, we offer sack lunches at Blanchet House so people have food to go. Donors usually decorate the bags with messages of love and encouragement, small reminders that someone cares.

Our staff is bracing for what’s ahead. With the closure of two low-barrier shelters, Market St. (120 beds) and Wy’East (90 beds), we expect more people in crisis to come to us for help navigating already overwhelmed systems. We’ll keep showing up, but these closures will be felt deeply.

Imagine walking down the street hungry, broke, cold and soaked from the rain, and seeing the warm glow of Blanchet’s café ahead. You’re welcomed in, no questions asked. On nights like this, that light means a hot meal, a dry place to sit, and the relief of being treated with dignity.

A woman in distress came to our door, wrapped in a blanket, injured, and overwhelmed. Blanchet House is where people turn in moments of crisis. A donor asked how this could happen. The answer was simple: we don’t question how someone got here. We help.

We had a long line and a big crowd for breakfast service. A great crew of volunteers and residents were able to fill in the gaps. Kudos to them! We did have to cut off the line after serving 360 plates. Many people lingered on a cold morning. Thank you to our supporters.

This arrived in our mail from a previous diner along with a $100 check. He wrote that Blanchet House gave him hope and comfort during one of the hardest times in his life, and that he wanted to give back. When people are met with compassion, they don’t forget it. They carry it forward.
