A free cafe and transitional shelter in Portland with an addiction recovery farm in Carlton. Open Mon-Sat. Volunteers needed. BlanchetHouse.org
We urgently need adult-sized gloves. People are coming to Blanchet House with cold hands, looking for a little relief. If you can help, please donate new or gently used gloves, Mon-Sat, 8-10:30am or 1:30-4pm. You can shop our wish list https://a.co/gNSmN46.

This is a small action with real impact.

When we’re cozy under comforters, it’s easy to think they’re the best to donate. The challenge is that shelters like Blanchet don’t have space to store bedding, and it’s hard to carry. Throw-style blankets help the most. They’re warm and easy to take along. James is modeling one here. Thank you.

Today we sketched the outlines of a mural at our soon-to-open women’s shelter, Bethanie’s Room. The artist cleverly designed the mural so volunteers of any skill level can help with the painting. Stay tuned for the final result.

On MLK Jr. Day, we honor more than words. King endured life-threatening opposition to demand dignity for Black, poor, and marginalized Americans. Today, Blanchet House is open, serving food, clothing, and support because hunger and homelessness are rooted in structural inequality.

These sweet kids and their grandma brought bags of brand-new blankets and clothes for our homeless guests. Aidrick asked if the people he saw outside would like what he brought. We told him he’d help keep them warm tonight.“Ok, good! bye! 6–7,” he said. Lol. Thanks Adrick, Lucy, & Grandma Sally.

Blanchet House is concerned by recent federal cuts to mental health and addiction services. We see every day how trauma and mental illness can lead to substance use, suffering, and homelessness, and how easy access to care keeps people housed. Nonprofits cannot replace a strong public safety net.

Brittany offered to make new table centerpieces for the cafe. Even simple, artificial flowers send a clear message to everyone who walks in. You matter here. You deserve beauty, care, and respect. Thanks, Brittany. If you're interested in taking on the centerpieces one month, please email us.

These two pups picked up new winter coats and supplies today at Blanchet House’s monthly supply and vet advice clinic. Vets Dr. Mack and Dr. Crabbe host the clinic each in our garage. Pets are important to our guests, and we want to make sure everyone can give their beloved animal what they need.

Every Saturday from 11:30-12:30, we offer sack lunches at Blanchet House so people have food to go. Donors usually decorate the bags with messages of love and encouragement, small reminders that someone cares.

Our staff is bracing for what’s ahead. With the closure of two low-barrier shelters, Market St. (120 beds) and Wy’East (90 beds), we expect more people in crisis to come to us for help navigating already overwhelmed systems. We’ll keep showing up, but these closures will be felt deeply.

A woman in distress came to our door, wrapped in a blanket, injured, and overwhelmed. Blanchet House is where people turn in moments of crisis. A donor asked how this could happen. The answer was simple: we don’t question how someone got here. We help.
