Anime 14: City The Animation
Rating: ★★★★★

The anime of the season. It's the absurdist humor told through relatable, lovable characters that we loved from Nichijou. Arawi just doesn't miss. The animation is so smooth and bright, the music is stellar, I could watch 100 episodes of this. Masterpiece.

Anime 13: Turkey! Time to Strike
Rating: ★★★★☆

A wild trip. It throws some intense situations at some cute girls that are written with surprising depth and it manages to land the weirdness in the ending. It throws everything at the wall. Not everything hits the bulls-eye, but nothing really misses.

Anime 12: Ruri Rocks
Rating: ★★★★★

It's not just 'cute girls learn about rocks.' There's a through-line that connects the subject they're teaching to how humans impact the environment, the importance of the scientific method and research. It ends up cute, fun, and very human forward. Masterful.

Anime 11: Dan Da Dan (S2)
Rating: ★★★★★

The anime blends empathy, horror, and humor extremely well. My partner and I were always in stitches or genuinely moved. None of the characters are annoying. I get a lot of laughs, and the dub is just incredible. I think S1 might have been slightly stronger.

Anime 10: Detectives These Days Are Crazy!
Rating: ★★★☆☆

A few of the episodes gave me big belly laughs, but the humor is inconsistent. Some of the characters are equal parts annoying and funny. When it lands a good episode, it's genuinely very good, but that's 3 episodes or so. The rest are okay.

Anime 9: Sakamoto Days (S1 and S2)
Rating: ★★★★☆

Sakamoto Days often feels familiar, like old shounen classics, not something that came out recently—to its benefit. It's a fun, sometimes simple, action-filled ride with a lot of humor and heart. I found myself really looking forward to the new eps.

Anime 8: The Summer Hikaru Died
Rating: ★★★★★

A master class in horror that makes you feel like you're in the old days with Higurashi and Fatal Frame II. Simply superb. Great characters, themes, animation, voice acting. It's slow and very urban, but it's so genuinely creepy and weirdly gay.

Anime 7: To Be Hero X
Rating: ★★★☆☆

This anime is incredibly animated and some of the episodes, including the climax episode, are amazing! I love the characters. But this was clearly designed with a S2 in mind, so I find it hard to recommend, it really ends with a few (well-animated) whimpers.
