NEW: We cannot continue to pump CO2 into the Atmosphere without re-arranging the Biosphere. Ellen Welti and I analyze datasets from the US Long Term Ecological Research site at Konza Prairie and reveal wholesale reorganization of plant biomass and biogeochemistry, with implications for its food web.
🌾 Overall, cover crop choice matters: diverse cover crop maximize ecosystem benefits, while herbicide-based management reduces them. 🏞️ Surrounding semi-natural habitats (grasslands, woodlots) amplify positive effects of local mgmt especially for natural pest control (Photo: S. Richart-Cervera)

New study out in Ecology Letters 🌱🐑!

Using long-term Åland monitoring data, we found that herbivory increases plant diversity across scales and flips the diversity–area relationship: a positive relationship is found in grazed sites while a negative one in ungrazed sites.

Herbivory Modifies the Role of Spatial Processes in a Grassland Plant Metacommunity
We empirically examined how mammalian herbivory interacts with habitat size and connectivity to affect plant diversity in a natural grassland metacommunity. We found that herbivory increased plant di...

I know I know, I'm in the same boat obviously, but English is not the same "easy language to learn" around the globe. I don't know a lot about languages, but we have an advantage over e.g. some Asian languages when learning English. Anyway, not my topic to pretend to be an expert :D
📢 Upcoming online seminar:

Next week (26th November) at 11am CET, Alice Penanhoat @alice4science.bsky.social from Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences will talk about her interdisciplinary research on forest structure 🌲🌳🔍

Agree with everything (except the ref manager issue haha), but I know that I'd use the hell out of AI if the global research language was Mandarin.

I am afraid this will indeed happen, at least in parts of the world.

Honestly, it's all tricky, I personally also believe that how people handle language tells a lot about their understanding of the matter, but my language is related to English, so is my thinking. It seems fair that rejection based on written language will decline.
But will it enable slop? Sure :/
NOTE: No detectable change in *activity density*: they measure bugs that have dispersed into the upper atmosphere. That is quite a few steps from abundance.

Consider (just one) scenario: abundance declines but warmer temps promote flight activity.

The Achilles’ Heel of malaise, pitfall traps…
New paper by Tielens, Stepanian, & Kelly uses weather radar to monitor flying insect communities across the USA over 10 years. Detected no change in density over 2012-2021, with lots of station to station variation. #openaccess paper here: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

For sure it homogenizes it. But a struggling ECR with a language background completely unrelated to the grammar, structure & flow of the English language has foremost one goal: write understandable emails, cover letters and papers - as fast as the competitors who do not struggle with language.

Good point. The sweet spot for efficient AI use is easily missed. I'd argue it is 100% efficient for 1) improving language for struggling non-native speakers and 2) writing R functions during data prep. For more advanced use, it's 50:50 useful vs useless (as of now).
