Grateful for this reporting from The Lead, shining a light on the devastating impact of reverting to a 28 day move-on period ⬇️

New asylum policies making homeless refugees “targets for the far right”
Labour’s abrupt return to the 28-day move-on period is pushing vulnerable people into rough sleeping and exposing them to fraud and abuse.

In the current climate, we’ve been exploring the use of illustration as an alternative to photography or videography to represent people we work with.

🚨 We are deeply concerned by the announcement made this afternoon by the Home Secretary with regards to routes to settlement. Making people who have been granted refugee status wait for up to 20 years before they can settle indefinitely in this country is both cruel and counter-intuitive.

📢 Volunteering must stay voluntary.

Demanding people prove a 'contribution' by volunteering ignores the incredible community work already done by migrants - especially people seeking asylum, who give up hours of their time for free while banned from work.

The current asylum system is already characterised by so many injustices. This video shines a light on some of them - particularly for people with newly granted refugee status ⬇️

⚠️ Following yesterday’s announcement by the Home Secretary to radically overhaul the UK asylum system, we condemn in the strongest terms the proposals made.

The scale and scope of the measures announced are abhorrent and represent a catastrophic threat to the right to refugee protection.

On the day the Government has announced plans to erode asylum rights even further, new research from @refugeestogether.bsky.social and @pcsunion.bsky.social by @lsepress.bsky.social shows that a fairer asylum system could help refugees and boost the UK economy ⬇️

At a time when the public conversation about people seeking safety has become increasingly hostile and polarised, many of us feel deeply uncomfortable with what we are hearing and don't recognise ourselves or our values in what is being said and done.

These are the voices you never hear. People seeking safety are trapped in hotel rooms for months, often years. These lengthy stays are ruining people’s lives, whilst lining the pockets of others. #ProfitingfromPeople

A section of the poem ‘We Refugees’ by Benjamin Zephaniah used to be part of a wall of murals in Hulme. The words ‘You are a catalyst for change’ were emblazoned on another piece of artwork above it.

While headlines focus on how many people claim asylum in the UK, there's one number that's not even officially counted:

The number of people who die while trying to seek sanctuary here.

We know our policies kill people. Their deaths must not be ignored.
