It would possibly be better if the US actually HAD a radical left, but we don't. We have right, far right, and nutso right. Our "leftists" are often what the world would call rightists.

I don't know how much it would pay for, but it certainly wouldn't affect their lives. It wouldn't even affect their wealth which would grow more than that in the year.

Bizarre for us, too. With Trump, the only sane thing to do is to assume he's lying. If by some accident, he speaks the truth, you can apologize later. Meanwhile, remember that in the Trumpverse, red is green, up is down, right is left, and honorable is shameful.
