Inconsistent electronic(?) musician in Exeter, UK circuitously via Chicago. I do other things too but I'm mainly here to talk about music. My music lives here: https://moonatlasrecords.com

At long last, I am excited to finally announce the release of my new album, "Here, Beneath the Ash-Choked Sky", available now on Bandcamp and streaming.

...so each new recording session starts with "what do I want to use and how do I want to hook things up this time?"

I'm so envious of that studio. However it's inspiring to hear your take on not keeping everything connected and ready to go. My studio doubles as a work-from-home office, so post-recording teardown is necessary, but I always saw it as an inconvenience. In truth, it does lead to creative new setups.

I am struggling to get past the image being rotated so that the beach is horizontal but the actual fucking horizon is on an angle.

Counterpoint to my self-loathing rant yesterday: I'm pretty sure someone will like some of this music I've been producing lately. I just need to find my ambient/feedback crew.

I hear you absolutely. So reassuring to read. I'm still (still!) stuck at the transition from "rationally know it to be true" to "intuitively know it to be true." I don't let it stop me but damn it if it doesn't put a drag on things. I finally decided to let it out in case others feel alone in it.

Although I'm far from the only person who makes music while also having a separate career....

It probably doesn't help that I can also (confidently) call myself a computational biologist, with the CV to prove it (like my discography isn't a CV). How can I possibly be something else at the same time? How can I ever be more than a mere "hobbyist" in my mind?

This thread was brought to you by feelings of guilt and self-loathing listening to some unreleased music last night. I should probably delete it but I'll leave my insecurities here for all to see.

Hopefully other people feel the same. Sorry if my recent stuff is full of feedback and not melodic. Sorry if I have dance music in my catalogue alongside drone, downtempo and noise. That's just what I do as a musician...I can't help it.

I've been flitting between/across genres for 25 years and my brain still makes me feel bad and ends up disowning my music when I produce something that doesn't sound like what I think the other music fans I identify with might like.

I've been producing music for about 25 years now and my brain still makes me feel like a phony when I call myself a "musician". Like I can't do that until I sign a contract to release something (I have), or I need a degree, or I need others to validate that title, or my music needs to be popular.

PREORDER: 'Jelly Tones' by Ken Ishii

Sleek techno LP from the Japanese producer, hearing him tackle Detroit flavoured sounds with his own unique approach.

Yes based on your posts lately we appear to be very much on the same page!

OK and by "new music" I guess I meant "really fucking moody, feedback-based noise", which may or may not fit your definition of music but I'm pretty happy with both 20 minute pieces.

I think I might have enough energy and motivation tonight to try to work on new music for the first time since...I dunno...June?
