The depositions from the batshit CBP and ICE officials in Chicago have been unsealed. Here's how Russ Hott denied actually knowing anything about one of the weirder claims they made: that a protestor had ripped someone's beard off.

Did you take any pictures of it? 17 A I did not. 18 Q Did somebody else? 19 A I'm not aware. 20 Q How do you know that this happened? 21 A From the officer reporting it. 22 Q Okay. Who is he? A I don't recall the officer's name. 2 Q Was it somebody that you were familiar 3 with before you began work on Midway Blitz? 4 A No. 5 Q Do you know whether a report was written 6 about this incident? 7 A I don't know that. 8 Q Do you know whether or not the person who 9 allegedly ripped off an officer's beard was charged 10 with a crime? 11 A I don't know that specifically.

And now I hear that the Siebel Institute is leaving Chicago, its home of over 150 years, for Montréal. Oof, a sad day for beer news.

Siebel embodies much of the US beer industry's historical growth. Even if it's not ending, this departure feels symbolic and dreadful.

I've obtained the text of the last-ditch letter the THC drinks business' biggest trade group and dozens of THC firms & distros sent to Congress earlier this weekend, pushing for a 5mg cap to forestall a de facto ban. It does not appear that they were successful:
Honorable Michael Johnson Speaker United States House of Representatives Washington, DC 20515 Honorable Hakeem Jeffries Minority Leader United States House of Representatives Washington, DC 20515 Honorable John Thune Majority Leader United States Senate Washington, DC 20510 Honorable Charles Schumer Minority Leader United States Senate Washington, DC 20510 Dear Speaker Johnson, Minority Leader Jeffries, Majority Leader Thune, and Minority Leader Schumer, We, the undersigned members of the business community representing alcohol wholesalers and retailers across the country, alongside some of the longest-standing hemp beverage operators, urge Congress to come together to establish sensible regulation so that there is a safe, regulated, and taxed path forward for hemp-derived beverages. Prohibition does not work. It simply shifts the sale of these products into the shadows and into the hands of bad actors who are peddling high-dose, unregulated and untested products. We are established, trusted and reputable operators that want to ensure that does not happen. While several letters, opinions and voices claiming to represent the industry have surfaced regarding the topic of hemp-derived beverages, we represent a unified voice across the largest operators in two of the three tiers (distribution and retail) from the alcohol industry. Hemp products, akin to alcohol, are effect-based and clear regulation is needed. Given the current legislative situation, we support a federal cap of 5mg naturally derived, delta-9 THC per serving for the beverage category. We urge you to reject any attempt to “ban first, regulate later” through the appropriations package. Genuine concerns regarding consumer safety will only be exacerbated with a ban. We believe it is important to have a federal regulatory baseline, paired with state rights to continue to develop state-specific regulatory frameworks. The business community stands ready to work together with lawmakers to implement smart, enforceable, and practical policies. The hemp beverage industry is swiftly approaching $1B in domestic sales, highlighting the growing consumer demand currently in the market and reflective of the more than 70% of respondents to McLaughlin & Associates' poll who said they want hemp products to remain legal and available. As U.S. companies with a long track record of safe and responsible market conduct, we understand the need to address concerns that have been raised regarding product integrity, underage access, and public safety. To that, we believe clear regulation to govern access to low-dose hemp beverages is the path forward that prioritizes consumer safety, drives tax revenue to enforce regulation, and ensures this consumer demand is served through responsible operators. Thank you for your leadership, and we stand ready to partner with you in this process.
