Real. Honestly a one of less significant reasons I did my degree outside the US is because I didn’t want to deal with the nonsense general ed math requirements lol
Corporate needs you to find the differences between these two images…… 🤨🤨
Since Jeremy Corbyn’s resignation as Leader of the Labour Party in 2020, the current and future occupiers of the position are not valid leaders due to their espousal of one or more heresies and that, for lack of a valid Leader, the Leader of the Labour Party is a vacant position,
Your Party are basically just the Labour Party’s sedevacantists
I am NEVER be able to do this on a day that I also have to go into the office. I don’t know how people do that regularly.
I will never not be upset about how going to the gym before work is infinitely better than going either during lunch or after work. That extra bit of discipline required to wake up a bit earlier is not realistic for me every day but on the occasion that it does happen? Unreal
Daylight savings time is over and it's already so dark. I'm not ready for this. 😭
Yeah that makes sense! It’s more lip service support than anything else. She does not strike me as a Russia sympathiser in any way, I just think she’s very misguided on what supporting Ukraine actually means.
Oh that’s absolutely not unrelated to the success of the spoil the vote campaign.
Humphreys on the other hand is a candidate from Fine Gael, one of the longstanding establishment parties, who are responsible for so many issues that Ireland has today, like the housing crisis. So ultimately I’m glad Connolly won over her but I’m not feeling too optimistic. 😭
Basically, she was the best option, but her platform is fundamentally flawed to me. If I was there to vote I would’ve voted for her but I wouldn’t have been enthusiastic about it, if that makes sense.
She was the best of two not-great options. Connolly is pro-migrant, pro-Palestine, speaks the Irish language, and is generally left wing. However she’s a weirdo on some other things, and has some really bad opinions on Ukraine and NATO rearmament.
Another explanation, less sinister, could be the fact that Miggeldy is so universally adored and that nobody running was anything like him. He was a great representative for Ireland. They don’t want to let him go. But there’s no way that’s the majority of the people who did this.
Either way I hope the IFP remain as disparate, unorganised, and unpopular as they currently are. This would be a golden opportunity for them for the next general election if they were in anyway shrewd, which thankfully they’re not. At least for now. I’m very worried.
This is pure speculation on my end. I’m sure there will be more on this in the coming days, and I really hope I’m not correct but I unfortunately think I am.
My theory on the huge amount of spoiled votes is that this was a coordinated effort by Irish far right, or even worse, it was organic. Neither of the candidates were sufficiently anti-migrant. Humphreys would’ve entertained their “legitimate concerns” but they don’t want a whisper, they want a shout
Yeah, the low turnout is disappointing but at least to me that made sense. But the sheer amount of people who made the effort to turn up just to spoil is worrying. Had no idea it was that many people. Insane

I am sorry but people are being stupid and complacent about the number of spoiled votes. Over 200,000 people spoiled their votes, over one in eight who turned out to vote. This is historically unprecedented in an Irish election.

Which of these people is a working-class voter?

Which is an identity politics voter?

The conventional wisdom's answers to those two questions is the root of much confusion about electoral politics in the US and Europe these days.

politics now is basically "everything is gender" and "everyone is 12 years old"

a lot of the class reductionist analysis you get these days stems from people basically just wishing they had the working class of 40 years ago to work with, not that of a service-based economy. they want to win revolution from the factories and are embarrassed by call centre workers with weird hair
I’d feel totally differently if it was a general election, or if an actual dangerous lunatic like Conor McGregor actually made it onto the ballot. But I look at Connolly and Humphries and think really? This is the best we could do? Surely not.
In any other circumstance turnout THIS low for an Irish election would have me deeply annoyed. But given the relatively low stakes and incredibly low quality of the two presidential candidates, I really can’t judge.
