I am LOL ing at the Dundee vs Motherwell game being called off because of 'Unprecedented Rain'.

Its Dundee and its Winter. Would of thought that its pretty normal.

Does this decision need to go to VAR?
Our match this evening against Celtic has been postponed.

Following an inspection by one of the match officials he has called the game off in the interests of player safety.

Details for the re-arranged match will be published in due course.

The dude who rented out the city of Venice for his wedding just fired a third of WAPO staff to save money. If you use or consume Amazon products you are helping an inglorious asshole become richer.

I did not. I am still not entirely convinced by him and his so called lofty ideals. FB was set up to perv women and spent eye watering amounts of money a VR with avatars that has no legs. All that money could of been spent on something tangible to benefit the whole society.

See, frinstance, THE IRON HEEL, by Jack London. Yeah, that Jack London. WHITE FANG Jack London. CALL OF THE WILD Jack London. Him. 1908.

Damn good book, btw. The man could write a little bit.
if only there had been books written in the 20th century about the dangers inherent in wealth concentration

I really hate that media layoffs have been happening for the last three years, including my own, and most of the people responsible for the mismanagement won't experience any negative consequences, especially for decimating the number of people of color in so many American newsrooms.

I don't know what it is about idiots who buy newspapers without understanding why they exist or what their business is, but I think gutting books coverage is some kind of canary in the coalmine. These jackasses don't read books, so they assume no one else does either.

The rich back then remembered the revolutions & the guillotines.
They had a healthy fear of this & channeled that into an ancient concept of “noblesse oblige”; “We get all the stuff but we give you other things to make YOUR tiny lives better.” 1/

We've lost the great Allan Massie. An absolute giant of Scottish literature and journalism, and an inspirational, kind and generous man, too. I think his son @alexmassie.bsky.social is only sporadically on Bluesky, but he has written a beautiful obituary. alexmassie.substack.com/p/allan-mass...

Oh I knew he was ruthless, a lot of the Victorian guys were awful. Using their workforces as practical slaves was common. He did come from poverty and that most of been a driver in that. Most of these current Billionaires all come from inherited money or money given to them by other rich nobs.

Agree with everything you said. I studied a bit of Econ Hist at Uni and while mostly European we touched on USA. Lively debates about rich society pulling up the economic drawbridge etc.. the bit I read about AC was he did want to give it all away. He came from poverty + Victorian guilt.

I know that use Andrew Carnegie far too much, but he was super rich and what did he do? He build libraries, funded schools and hospitals. I believe some of the funds he set up are still doing stuff today.
