IIRC someone eventually was like, hey, we have this giant pile of moose skulls we’ve been collecting for 50 years, can we use bull moose antler condition correlate with season of death and use it as a proxy in an estimate for predation?

really cool to read

One of the themes that‘s strong when the Isle Royale wolf researchers talk about their work over the decades is the challenge of conducting observations when there’s undergrowth & canopy cover. Makes it hard to answer fundamental questions like how many hunts succeed when half the year is thin data

I thought this was neat; i appreciated the discussion of how difficult the team found it to try and get reasonable coverage of what the canine crew were up to at night, even with the aid of NV equipment

“Both wolves and dogs showed the expected bimodal pattern of activity over the day, which suggests that the deviation from such patterns observed in companion dogs (Griss et al., 2021) is likely due to adjusting to certain humans rather than the result of domestication.”

”We found more subtle effects of domestication than expected. First, domestication has evidently not affected the impact of the extrinsic Zeitgeber temperature and daily light regime, since our results have shown that level of activity in wolves and dogs varied in the same way.”

Any Younger Dryas article in the popular press needs to be illustrated with an actual mountain avens (Dryas octopetala) instead of a comet.

This is little tundra flower is what the period is named for (they got to be really, really common during several cold periods after the last glacial maximum).
Two Dryas flowers, simple white flowers with 8 petals arranged in a circle around a center with many small anthers. A bee and a fly are crawling on one of the flowers. From Wikipedia.

Ah, happy 88th anniversary of the day Oswald Mosley tried to sell fascism to Liverpudlians – and someone concussed him with a brick
A man in a suit stands at a microphone which has been mounted on the roof of a van. There are loudspeakers at his feet, and a building behind him. He has an arm raised, and is flinching as projectiles are hurled at him, because he's a fucking Nazi

i’m not a fan of the whole USA university greek life thing but its a hurricane coast home rebuilding eagle scout project in comparison to whatever those kids are up to, which probably exceeds the fevered conspiracist imaginings of the most tortured grant morrison graphic novels

A park employee, who spoke with SFGATE on the condition of anonymity to protect their job, said they know of only one wilderness ranger working the entire park. And technically, that person is not even a ranger, the employee said, but a volunteer.

think laterally about the combined effects of physical infrastructure, social-institutional relationships, overlapping professional and demotic cultures with different expectations & priorities & resources & levels of vulnerability and it just keeps going
