i checked sample rate in the focusrite software. i've also made sure it matches everything else

it is, but i don't think it's a USB-C issue. the crackling only happens while a game is running. if i speak into it/record without a game running, things are fine.

unplugged all USB devices except the focusrite
various power settings within windows
updated drivers (both for focusrite and my GPU)
changed sample rate, buffer size

just gonna throw this out there in case anyone else has a solution:
my mic/audio interface (at-2035, focusrite 2i2 3rd gen) has started crackling/popping when i speak into it while a game is running. doesn't matter which game. any ideas or advice on what i should do?
