I'm a little surprised so many sites are publishing final reviews of Battlefield 6. Unless everybody was finding full lobbies I could not...I'm not sure anyone has *really* played multiplayer yet. It was 90% bots.

It’d be hard not to when every bot has “[Bot]” in its name.

David Simon, creator of ‘The Wire’, being interviewed by Ari Shapiro (NPR)
SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without Al, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...
SIMON: What?
SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...
SIMON: You imagine that?
SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.
SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.
SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.
SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.

Look. I totally get the despair and frustration. But every couple of weeks someone else is asking "where's press coverage for indie games?" and like, have you been under a rock? It's been torn to pieces my dudes! The devastation of games media has been widely talked about!
lincolnhello.bsky.social
best suggestion I can offer is to reach out directly to writers already covering games with similar appeal to yours, and as early as is feasible.

the state of games press now is that there are fewer working writers than ever, and their attentions are often occupied weeks or months in advance thanks to release calendars overstuffed by the ~20,000 Steam games launching each year.
mikerose.bsky.social
We've been around for ages now, and we have means for getting our games out there into the word without the press

But new teams, teams smaller than ours, teams without the means -- are they just fucked?

Is this really the state of the games press now -- if it ain't AAA, go fuck yourself?

If you only read one story today, make it @nicolecarpenter.bsky.social's breakdown of the Saudi-backed EA buyout, which includes thoughts from multiple business analysts and experts who explain what the $55B deal could mean for EA workers, its video games, and the wider industry.

Essential reading.

repost this if an editor has ever saved you from yourself

An actual hot take: Too many authors are afraid of editors watering down their voice or whatever and not afraid enough of editors letting you put any old slop on the page.

All the doofuses salivating about ChatGPT extruding video game shaped slop don't understand a thing about the true opportunities of procedurally generated game worlds that have nothing to do with GenAI, such as this

the what assassination
zachschonfeld.bsky.social
A man who witnessed the Lincoln assassination lived until 1956 and could have theoretically listened to the first album by Harry Belafonte, who in turn lived long enough to hear "WAP"

you ever think about those real weird overlaps. like tennessee williams might have listened to the ramones

I think this is bang on, and gets at a sense of what I see in play with stuff from Dwarf Fortress and Qud to Rimworld to Crusader Kings and the Sims: a desire to understand the world, whether a familiar or an alien one, through play
