Uhh, yeah, we did. "Bubble wrap monster" is a punchline even 20 years after Eccleston and Billie. The 1980 season not doing well was (at least in the popular consciousness) ascribed to Buck Rogers being on the other side.

I've heard this multiple times, but I don't get which Alien media this is even referring to. Because it's definitely not in Alien Earth (which has like one or two grown Xenomorphs total? AND the new aliens like the eye creature are highly lethal.)

I got frustrated with the Anticitizen One/Follow Freeman area and quit on my recent Half-Life 2 playthrough, but even then I certainly don't agree with the idea it's little more than a shallow tech demo.
