it's one thing to hold self-driving cars to an impossible standard of being perfect drivers ... but "at least as good as humans" is the minimum bar to clear here. yikes.
the most recent data shows Waymo's self-driving cars perform significantly *better* than human drivers.

the most recent data shows Tesla Robotaxis perform significantly *worse* than human drivers, even with a safety monitor in the front seat. sherwood.news/tech/teslas-...
Tesla’s 29 Austin Robotaxis have crashed 8 times since June, as data suggests they perform much worse than human drivers
That’s a lot of crashes for such a small fleet....

Maybe 20 years ago, a friend and I chit chatted with someone next to us at a diner. He said he had worked on movies, like When Harry Met Sally. He gave his sunglasses to my friend.

I don't remember the person or the conversation too clearly, but I'm pretty sure I met Rob Reiner?

addams family values is not a thanksgiving movie! they are at summer camp, when they do a play about the first thanksgiving. however, it can be watched at any time of year.

I hate the "surge" framing, because it makes it sound like a legitimate thing that they're just considering doing more of, rather than an illegitimate and unnecessary thing in the first place.

what do people in other countries say instead of "one mississippi, two mississippi, ..."?

seems like an oversight to not have wellsfoundation.net from Loot Season 2 actually point to a valid website. (though at least it's registered! by NBC Universal?)

English Teacher is so clever and funny, but in particular, "Grant's Dinner Party" (S2E3) is laugh-out-loud hysterical!

I feel like I am the only person who only watches podcasts. I can't listen to them, I get distracted. But watching them is like watching a talk show. I love it!
a lot of folks have video podcasts but they should really have audio only podcasts

this is also why I think we'll never change to metric. if "do this simple thing or you'll get sick" wasn't enough, then "some nerds like dividing by 10" will definitely never happen.
Covid is gonna shape American politics for years and years because it was the first time most Americans were asked to make sacrifices and they lost their minds because of it.
That's kinda the vibe of so many folks I grew up near (South Texas) of the older generations.

They legitimately were changed by the COVID chaos. They went from being like, generous Christians to being locked inside their giant homes screeching about Fauci.

there's no reason that "I bought this before Elon went crazy" bumper stickers can't go on cars other than Teslas

"It's not MSNBC anymore, Lemon. It's MS NOW. We bought the name off of a defunct multiple sclerosis awareness organization. It wasn't cheap, but we were able to save some money by selling Brian Williams to a Saudi prince who wanted to expand his harem."

And Just Like That is so bad. it's like an AI that was trained solely on two things: (a) Sex and the City and (b) Fox News talking about how they think young people behave. cancellation is well over due. (i watched every episode.)

the new The Naked Gun is laugh-out-loud funny, already one of the best movies in the genre, featuring some hilarious gags i don't think i've ever seen done before. nonstop laughter the entire movie.

it's been cold here in SF, so it doesn't really feel like "summer time", but the number of event tickets i'm buying says otherwise.

"What is the culture that made you say culture is for you?"

for me, The Rosie O'Donnell Show. ran home from school to watch her. hung this al hirschfeld print in my living room. best talk show host of all time.

(fun fact: one of her staffers later went on to produce the The Wendy Williams Show!)

the new Superman is great, though the parallel to today's real-life supervillains was a little too accurate. but honestly, the bad guys weren't the worst part of the movie. it's all their goons who seemed happy to be dumb or evil or both.

Superman Isn’t Trying to Be Political. We Just Have Real-Life Supervillains Now.
James Gunn’s delightfully earnest, goofy take on the Man of Steel doesn’t need to stretch for relevance.

remember when we were kids and we used to say "pee-yew" when something was stinky, but we never knew whether to spell it "pee-yew" or "peiu" (we told each other it was french) or even "P. U."? well, i like P. U., and i'm trying to bring it back.
