The NDP is kind of useful in a Canadian context because it gives more radical left-wing ideas a voice in parliament in a way that doesn't discredit the center-left if they turn out to be bad. The Canadian right used to have two parties as well, and merging them was arguably a sign of weakness.

The job of political parties in democratic politics is to have a determinate policy and then to campaign to form government so as to implement that policy.

Using the fig leaf of (internal) democracy to avoid having a policy on the most decisive issue is the opposite of how parties serve democracy.

"When in doubt, draw a distinction."

Not sure where he got it, but in grad school one of my teachers taught me that.

This (long) thread is about the key distinctions I rely on as a critic. There's a Twitter version from 2021. This one builds on that one.

I will post them one at a time. Ready?

Canadian friends: today is *the very last day* to buy a membership in the NDP and have a say in who the party's next leader will be.

Only members can vote in March.

On climate and economic justice, we need a strong third party.

Don't sit it out!

and that's in the current leadership vacuum environment -- if someone smart, whether that's the alberta tory party or Lukaszuk or whoever actually steps up and starts actually wedging at the stress point of the ucp coalition/separatist coalition (trumpy-vs non-trumpy) and you break some of those
