It was a beautiful fall afternoon to do some seed collecting. We'll add these (and more) to our campus prairie reconstruction, as part of the restoration ecology course

In The Garden Today | 2 Nov
Our Amalanchier is in full #fall glory this week. This small tree has many local names: Serviceberry, Juneberry, Saskatoon & Shadbush – the last because its froth of white spring blooms open just when shad swim upriver to spawn. #Trees #QuietJoys #NativePlants #FallColor

Not your regular OSB wood chip panel.

We got a few coaster samples at the office from www.plantdmaterials.com

They’re making building materials from rapidly renewable prairie grasses (not trees).

If anyone in Vancouver wants one, pop by the office.

Witch Hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) is blooming! A food source for the remaining pollinators and a bit of brightness in the forest understory. This year's seed is currently in warm stratification until December, then will be cold stratified until March. #nativeplants

There was enormous attention on Doug Ford's World Series Ad.
Much less attention on his CDN ad.
Doug is promising to rip up "red tape" to get at the Ring of Fire ore bodies.
People in the region have gone 30 years without drinking water. He refuses to meet them.

This is southern sugar maple (Acer floridanum, formerly Acer barbatum) which has a pretty good distribution in the state except for the coast. You can see the resemblance to sugar maple in the leaf shape but the color is often a nice, clear yellow with perhaps a hint of orange. #nativeplants

Red maple (Acer rubrum) is one of our earliest trees to show fall color. Its red color is a major component of wild fall color. Its color is, however, variable. This collection of leaves from a single neighborhood showcases both the variable shapes and colors of its leaves. (1/2) #nativeplants

Amazon just announced 14,000 layoffs. Its CEO made over $40M last year.

UPS announced 48,000 layoffs. Its CEO made over $24M last year.

Intel announced 20,000 layoffs. Its new CEO's pay package is valued at nearly $69M.

This is what I mean when I say the system is rigged.
Our farmers dump thousands of kgs of poop on the fields that run through tile directly into our streams and rivers. Industry dumps their waste directly into our lakes. PFAS are infiltrating every ounce of our biome. We use human waste products for fertilizer. This is dangerous.
