Hello North Carolina! I just joined the @charlotteobserver.com's investigative team. I am a data reporter, which means I find and report stories on trends, systemic problems, outliers or disparities based on my own analyses. Think of me as a coder-math-nerd-journalist hybrid.

An actual hot take: Too many authors are afraid of editors watering down their voice or whatever and not afraid enough of editors letting you put any old slop on the page.

Excited to get to know this incredible state and tell your stories. I'm a long way from home but vibes here are so welcoming I already feel at home.

Also, big trees and changing leaves are really nice.

I moved from AZ, where I spent ~ 10 years at the Arizona Republic. My investigations prompted sweeping impact there, including the state's first-ever memory care standards, tougher assisted living oversight and the state-takeover of the most violent facility.

After Republic investigation, Gov. Katie Hobbs OKs new law to reform assisted living facilities
AARP Arizona called it "a significant piece of legislation aimed at enhancing the safety, oversight and quality of long term care across Arizona."

We love you Maddie. For 16 years you were my rock. A tiny girl with a huge presence. Not many cats would tackle 4 cross-country moves, camping trips & raising 10 puppies with curiosity and grace. You feared nothing & loved your people hard. Andrew & I are broken without you. @apantazi.bsky.social

Our President and CEO George McCarthy recently discussed manufactured housing in Arizona with The Arizona Republic. By Catherine Reagor and @caitmcglade.bsky.social: www.azcentral.com/story/money/...
Screenshot of an azcentral newspaper article titled “People living in these homes are more likely to die from heat in Arizona” by Catherine Reagor and Caitlin McGlade, published July 31, 2025. The article includes a bar chart comparing share of the housing market to share of heat-related deaths in Arizona by housing type. RVs, trailers, or mobile homes make up 5% of the housing market but account for 22% of heat-related deaths. Houses or apartments make up 95% of the housing market but account for 78% of heat-related deaths. Data source: Maricopa County Public Health; graphic by Caitlin McGlade/The Republic.

Larry Richardson appeared to be an early-career mathematician with potential, racking up more than 130 citations in 4 years.

It would all be rather remarkable—if the studies weren’t complete gibberish. And if Larry wasn’t a cat. #InternationalCatDay scim.ag/4lg3wTp

The perpetrator of the July 28 mass shooting that killed four people, including a police officer, in a Midtown Manhattan office building had twice been hospitalized for mental health reasons. He was still able to get a gun.
The NYC Shooter Had a Documented Mental Health History. How Did He Get a Gun?
The July 28 mass shooting highlights a gap in the law that has allowed shooters to keep their gun rights after hospitalization for a mental health crisis.

Years ago, border czar Tom Homan saved undocumented immigrants from deportation in Phoenix.

Then came Trump. Now Homan's former colleagues don't recognize the cruel man -- "Hulk Homan," one calls him -- that he's become.

Tom Homan once spared Phoenix migrants. Now he’s Trump’s Darth Vader
Pre-Trump, colleagues of border czar Tom Homan described him as reasonable. Now, they see a cruel man they don’t recognize.

The epitome of living with chronic migraines is being such a pro at pushing thru severe symptoms bc we’re taught to be ashamed of our headaches, that we’re overreacting, that we’re hypochondriacs to the point that an MRI finds a scar showing that years ago you had a stroke and you just kept going.

Fast-growing AZ school districts depend on bonds. But the fastest growing ones are in Trump-leaning areas. The better Trump does in a Maricopa County precinct, the worse a bond campaign does. The correlation grew with each of Trump's runs. By me, @azcentral.com:

Some Arizona school districts face financial risk. In rural areas, some are on the brink
A state auditor general report published earlier this year found dozens of other school districts to be facing some sort of financial risk.
