Austrian Word of the Week 65 is "Kompromiss" — compromise. Carefully crafted after WW2, K. is the ability to know the other & respect their limits. The world needs more "Kompromiss" these days, so let it blossom in & spread from AUT. @bundespraesident.at rightly called it a"cultural treasure".

Austrian Word of the Week 63 is a beauty: Sukkus, der (formal in Standard AutG for 'essence'). As in the attached passage from today's @derstandard.at: der Sukkus der FPÖ ist: alles ganz normal. Mitnichten! Nothing is normal with a postfascist party vying for head of government. Fire in the roof!

Prefixes are fascinating! They are added on to the beginning of a word to create an entirely new word. Sometimes this new word means the exact opposite of the original. Think of the prefix im-. Add it to words like possible, plausible, or perfect and their meanings become the exact opposite.

Austrian Word of the Week 62 is, fitting for the current month: Jänner 'January'. Germany uses Januar. Jänner is non-standard in Germany (plight of the Bavarians). In Austria, it is always and everywhere (also in Vbg.) Standard Austrian German. When will "Deutsch in Österreich" dig things like that?

Small but important discovery for the Historical #Dictionary of #ScienceFiction: an antedating of the contested term "sci-fi" (often attributed to Forrest Ackerman) from 1954 to 1953 (thanks to @hugovk.dev for bibliographic work here).

Yep, songs about right and is precisely the biggest problem in a field where folks rather ridicule a colleague than discuss their critique of your work. All that's wrong in academia. Fix this and everything else will follow...

@benzimmer.bsky.social, what's your assessment? My own hunch is that it's comparable to the "-ussy" (considering its etymology), which, if right, leads me to the question: do we have to weight WOTY votes going forward? Gr8 initiative, as always. @americandialect.org WOTY: always gainful.
So where does "rawdog" rank in terms of media friendliness among all the WOTYs over the years?

True. Impossible to finish, 'em lunch sizes. Can I have a small portion please (it's one huge size fits all - more conducive for a hyper capitalist system). Still nice, though, definitely not sustainable or "green" and feeling wasteful.
