Gregory's letter recommends the conversion of temples, not festivals. The only direction he gives re timing is 'on the day of the dedication, or the nativities of the holy martyrs'. Bede only says that the people kept using the old name for the new festival, not that missionaries rebadged it.
Only to the extent that there were rabbits at Fishbourne as part of the captive menagerie. Something of a blip on the historical record.
