Lessons from Vancouver on the value of city leadership, keeping "bikelash" in perspective, and transforming into a bicycle-friendly city.
modacitylife.com
When newly-elected Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson started converting car lanes to bike lanes in 2009, pundits claimed it was political suicide. In 2018, he stepped down after three terms as the longest-serving mayor in the city's history. So what can this tale teach us about so-called "bikelash"?🧵

Brissy pollies love to talk about road projects being "congestion busting" but the opposite is true.
More roads = more congestion eg LA
Seoul removed a freeway and not only got a river back but reduced congestion!

Every bold urban transformation asks a question: what will people remember—the controversy or legacy?

Showing great leadership, Seoul Mayor Lee Myung-bak bet on the latter, replacing a motorway with a waterway.

Two decades later, absolutely no one regrets the decision or remembers the controversy.

Woohoo! Confirmation from Brisbane City Council (via the media) one footpath on the Story Bridge will be open again tomorrow (Friday)!

Council are now saying "The latest expert advice confirmed the footpaths could last another two to five years”. Then why close both footpaths with no notice?

, Cr Wines claims that BCC has spent more than a "billion" on active transport infrastructure but the question is was all of it council funds?
Many BCC have been co funded by the State or Federal Government!

Remember when Brisbane had CityCycle?
It could of been a success, but the our LNP run council refused to install safe, protected and connected bike lanes!
If you provide safe, direct cycling infrastructure people will ride!

This morning the Story Bridge Bike Bus crew celebrated the 150th bike bus journey with party hats, cake and sparklers.

The 8am bike bus has been a great community initiative to get people across the bridge safely after BCC suddenly closed active transport access.

Celebrating World Car-Free Day on Herschel St this morning, with a pop-up protected bikelane. Our lane took a few minutes to install, was cheap and effective. Hope Brisbane City Council was watching to see how well the lane worked.

After allowing the structural safety of the Story Bridge shared paths to degrade to such a condition they were no longer safe, it is positive to hear from Lord Mayor Schrinner that one path with the temporary surface will be open to foot & bike traffic before the end of the year.

Pop-up bikelane on Herschel St for World Car-Free Day

After Council gave a non-committal response to our 800-signature petition, we intend to show how easy it would be to install a protected bikelane on Herschel for people to ride between the Bicentennial Bikeway, the CBD and northern suburbs.

A little reminder cities don't become cycling cities because their pollies say they're cycling cities, they become cycling cities due to the hard work of installing safe, protected infrastructure.
Brisbane could be the same if our pollies had the will!

We've grown London's network of cycleways by over 450% since 2016 - enabling millions of people to cycle safely around the capital every week.

The Dutch we're always the cycling dream.
They got there through hard work.
Brisbane could be the same if our pollies did some hard work!

Pedal through any Dutch city, and it feels like it’s always been filled with red cycle paths. But the fact is urban cycling infrastructure didn’t exist anywhere until 1975, when a trial project in Tilburg laid the basis of a national standard for legibility, comfort, and status for people on bikes.🧵

It is good to hear that the Story Bridge paths are receiving a new temporary surface for reopening.
This new path surface is only temporary or as 9 News Queensland described it, only a "band aid" solution as the existing path surface below will remain & continue to degrade.

A little reminder that cities aren't noisy, cars are!
modacitylife.com
For decades, Dutch authorities have recognised the problem of noise pollution, making its mitigation a specific policy outcome of their spatial and transport planning. The result in Delft: a rich soundscape shaped by humans not machines, punctuated by a regular performance from the town carillonist.

Burg Reigerstraat in Utrecht is a fietsstraat, a cycling street where bikes have priority and cars are considered guests. By keeping speeds low and designing the street to feel comfortable for riders of all ages, it creates a calmer, safer environment.

Brisbane City Council has asked for feedback on the future of Kedron Brook.

2)Make the paths more resilient
3)Install lighting that is solar-powered & flood proof.
4)Plant additional trees
5)Changes comply with TMR guidelines.
